Obviously, firearms safety is always foremost in training, and the class is filled with safety training that far surpasses the Virginia guidelines. Our class contains a lot more information than the styate requires. Knowing how to defend safely needs a great deal of knowledge of the legal ramifications of the use of a firearm for personal defense. That information is central to our class structure at Freedom Services & Training. That is why our class is longet than most other classes.

For the individual that is new to the use of a firearm for personal protection, the choice of a weapon can be somewhat stressful. There are so many different models, styles, actions, and calibers that the mind becomes bogged down in information overload. This class can remove a lot of the stress and keep the new user away from the pitfalls of buying the wrong gun.

This class covers the different choices, available and usable for self-defense, different actions styles, different calibers, and different price ranges. Other items covered in the class are the different choice of clothing used for concealment, concealment at different times of year, off body and on body concealment, open carry, and carrying in your vehicle. The “shoot box” with weapons of different style, action, caliber, size, weight, and design configuration are available for review. Basic Pistol Training consists of operation of the firearm in a safe and careful manner, the ability to place a projectile from the firearm at a specific spot on a target without causing damage or harm to anything but the target. The recognition and basic understanding of different types of actions and ammunition are also part of the class. Storage of firearms and ammunition, as well as, some of the basic drills and practice needed to make one proficient in the use of the chosen firearm also are covered.

So many people stress about going to the range for the first time. It's like not going to the gym before you lose some weight so you don't look bad or out of place. This class relieves a lot of that stress. The class covers things that make you look at least somewhat familiar with the range and its pitfalls. Subjects covered are terminology, gun talk, and range etiquette. Safety is always at the forefront. A handful of drills to practice are included. These drills are very basic, and with practice, will make any new shooter fit in with the most experienced gun enthusiast. Regular practice does not have to include a trip to the range. To the contrary, practice in your own home is what gets you ready to maximize your productive time at the range. Other subjects include takedown and field strip of your weapon, cleaning and care, and cleaning kits and supplies needed to do a proper job of caring for your weapon. While this is a pretty short class, the amount of information far outshines the short time in the classroom. The drills are designed to be done in the home, using absolute safety procedures. Repetition makes great gun muscles that take over after a number of reps. These are the muscles you will fall back on automatically in an attack. This basic training is a must have for the new shooter or the new concealed carry holder.

Upon completion of the class, you will get everything you will need to apply for a non-resident concealed carry permit from the state of Utah, with the exception of the following three things:

1. Passport picture done or have one that is less than six months old. No hats, no glasses, and anything the photographer says cannot be covering your face. Walgreen, CVS and several other stores do them, cost is about $12 to $15. And usually takes less than half an hour.
2. A check or credit card info as per the instructions on the Utah Application. Fee is $63.25. Permit renews in 5 years and can be renewed online.
3. Affix postage on the envelope before you mail it. Everything else will be provided. Addressed envelope for mailing. Utah Application with instructions Fingerprint card Copy of Virginia Driver’s License Copy of Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit A copy of the curriculum that is taught (on CD) It takes up to 60 days to get the permit back.

The class also discusses who the new shooter could talk to for opinions on handguns. Friends and family are always available and more than welcome to share their opinions. The new shooter can choose what they want to choose to believe, and who they want to believe, but should understand that opinions are basically that, they are opinions. Everyone has opinions. They may or may not be a good fit or a good reason to purchase a specific firearm. Most firearms instructors have a very good background when choosing firearms. Be aware, they are only human and will have their own opinions about style and caliber and so forth. But mostly they will not steer you the wrong direction.

The “shoot box” with weapons of different style, action, caliber, size, weight, and design configuration are available for review. While many hundreds of different styles of firearms are available and are completely usable as self-defense weapons, the styles available from the shoot box can begin to give the new user a good idea of what to look for.
