What You'll Learn
The USCCA Concealed Carry and Home Defense Fundamentals Instructor Course is an outstanding, modern course. It will provide you with the tools you need to be an outstanding instructor and provide your students with current information regarding concealed carry and home defense. This course is one of the approved instructor courses by the State of Utah to become a Utah Concealed Firearm Permit instructor. You must also complete the instructor course offered by the Utah BCI to complete your Utah instructor credentials.
The course includes an online prerequisite course that must be completed prior to attending the instructor course. The online learning course is included in the cost of the course. After you have registered for the course on this website you will receive information to access the online portion of the course. The online course takes approximately 6-8 hours to complete.
Upon successful completion of the instructor course you will also receive your instructor tool kit. The tool kit includes an instructor polo, 10 copies of the USCCA Concealed Carry and Home Defense Fundamentals student manual and classroom posters. You will also be able to complete additional curriculum tool kits to teach additional USCCA courses (additional cost) such as Emergency First Aid Fundamentals, Countering the Mass Shooter Threat, Women’s Handgun and Self-Defense Fundamentals, and Children’s Firearm Safety Fundamentals. These additional curriculums require the completion of online learning modules without the need to attend additional instructor courses.
To maintain your credentials as a USCCA instructor you will need to teach a minimum of 20 students per year and log your classes into the USCCA instructor portal.

Bruce Illum has been an active firearms instructor for over 20 years. He is also a professional educator with a Masters Degree in Chemistry Teaching. He taught Jr High for 33 years before retiring in 2021. He holds Training Counselor and Instructor credentials from the USCCA, NRA, Utah Hunter Education and is a Utah Concealed Firearms Permit Instructor. He is active in the community and is the Range and Target Activities Chair for the Crossroads of The West Council for Scouting America. He served as a shooting sports director for 5 years at various summer camps in California and Wyoming. He has also served on staff at the BSA National Camp School in the Range and Target Activities section as a staff member at Phillmont as well as a section director at Camp Tracy and Hubert Eaton Scout Reservation.

Cancellation Policy: Students are required to cancel at least 30 days prior to the first day of the class in order to receive a refund. Classes cancelled less than 30 days prior to class can be creditied to a future course. No Refunds will be given for students who fail to meet course objectives/standards or for dismissal from class for Firearms Safety Violations. INSTRUCTOR level courses have a 50% non-refundable course fee.

Concealed Carry & Home Defense Fundamentals - Certified Instructor
Upon successfully completing this course, you will become a USCCA Certified Instructor uniquely authorized to teach the USCCA course, Concealed Carry and Home Defense Fundamentals.
This course has become the nation’s leading curriculum for law-abiding Americans seeking to obtain their concealed carry permit. When it comes to firearms fundamentals and concealed carry and home defense concepts, you will provide your students with high-quality material and help them understand the ‘why’ behind training concepts.
Class Preparation: You must complete the corresponding online learning course. (Automatically sent to you upon registering for the class.)
Day 1: you’ll be taught by a USCCA Training Counselor on a number of valuable topics including:
- Top ten instructor mistakes and how to avoid them
- Teaching best practices
- Running a safe live fire range
Day 2: You’ll have a chance to:
- Demonstrate your knowledge of the USCCA training material through seven short presentations to a group of your peers
- Run a live fire range, guiding your peers through the safe completion of the USCCA course of fire

Additional Notes from Your Instructor
USCCA requires a minimum of 2 qualified instructor candidates as participants to hold this course. If the minimum number is not met the course will be postponed. (Not cancelled)
