Brian’s life turned upside down in 2019 when he shot his ex-wife''s violent ex-boyfriend in self-defense. Arrested and charged with first-degree murder, the North Carolina Army veteran faced months in jail, fighting to prove his innocence. His lawyer, Kevin Marcilliat, of the USCCA Attorney Network, believed in Brian’s self-defense claim and worked tirelessly to uncover inconsistencies in police reports.
Despite the chaos, Brian’s faith and the support of the USCCA kept him hopeful. Key evidence, including witness testimonies and the distance from the shooter to the attacker, played a crucial role in his defense. After 110 days in jail, Brian was released on bond.
Marcilliat’s persistent efforts led the district attorney to dismiss the case 144 days after the incident. Brian’s ordeal underscores the importance of preparation, legal protection and faith in navigating such life-altering events. Thankfully, his case never made it to trial. Brian credits his survival to both his faith and the USCCA''s support. He shudders to think what would have happened if he didn’t have that USCCA Membership.
“I’d probably still be in jail,” Brian said.
