My Biography
Thessalonia Fonville is a proud United States Marine Corps veteran who honorably served for eight years, demonstrating exceptional leadership, resilience, and commitment to service. As a minority woman veteran, she embodies strength, discipline, and integrity—qualities that continue to guide her professional and personal endeavors.
Following her military service, Thessalonia continued her dedication to public safety in federal law enforcement, where she gained valuable experience in security, compliance, and training. During this time, she became a federally certified Ground Defense Instructor, providing specialized defensive tactics instruction to law enforcement professionals.
Today, she serves as a highly credentialed instructor in the private security and firearms training industry. Thessalonia is certified by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) as an official instructor and holds instructor certifications from the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA), where she is both a Certified Instructor and a USCCA Firearms Instructor.
Her expertise spans unarmed and armed defensive tactics, firearms safety, concealed carry, and professional security officer training. Through her leadership at SYWO Security Academy, LLC, Thessalonia provides aspiring security professionals and responsible citizens with the knowledge, discipline, and confidence to safeguard themselves and others.

Basic Handgun is a comprehensive Introductory firearms course for anyone considering owning or carrying a firearm for self-defense.

Introduction to Concealed Carry and Home Defense Fundamentals is a comprehensive Introductory firearms course for anyone considering owning or carrying a firearm for self-defense. The Children’s Firearms & Safety Fundamentals program fosters a partnership between parents and firearms experts to teach children firearms safety, while allowing parents to determine the education that is best suited for their child and their individual development.
■ This course is not a “how-to-shoot-a-gun” course, but rather a comprehensive safety curriculum designed for all parents and adults – gun owners or not – to facilitate important discussions about firearms and situational awareness with children in the same way they would discuss fire or school safety.
■ The program has two key components: ◻ Fundamental Safety Lecture ◻ Family-Focused Safety Series

The 01E Unarmed Security Officer Training Course prepares individuals to enter the private security profession with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to perform their duties effectively and responsibly. This Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) entry-level course covers the fundamental responsibilities of unarmed security officers, including legal authority, ethics, patrol procedures, communication techniques, report writing, emergency response, and situational awareness.
Students will gain practical knowledge designed to help them protect people, property, and assets while maintaining professionalism and safety in the workplace. Successful completion prepares students to apply for DCJS registration as an Unarmed Security Officer and begin working in the security field in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

05E Armed Security Officer Arrest Authority: Provides security professionals with the essential legal knowledge and practical understanding required to exercise arrest authority while performing security duties in the Commonwealth of Virginia. This training focuses on the laws governing detention and arrest, use-of-force considerations, constitutional rights, professional conduct, and proper procedures when interacting with suspects and law enforcement.
Students will gain a clear understanding of their legal responsibilities, limitations, and liabilities while performing armed security duties. Successful completion of this course satisfies the Virginia DCJS training requirement for Armed Security Officer Arrest Authority.
75E Security Officer Handgun Training: Provides comprehensive firearms instruction for individuals seeking to perform armed security duties in Virginia. This 24-hour DCJS-approved course includes classroom instruction and live-fire range training designed to develop safe firearm handling, marksmanship fundamentals, and responsible use-of-force decision-making.
Students will learn firearm safety, weapon handling, situational awareness, legal considerations, and defensive firearm fundamentals. Participants must successfully pass the written examination and firearms qualification course to meet DCJS requirements for the Security Officer Handgun Endorsement.

The CPR/First Aid/AED Training Course is a comprehensive, hands-on program designed to prepare participants to recognize and respond confidently to cardiac, breathing, and first-aid emergencies. Students will learn essential lifesaving skills that can be used at home, in the workplace, and throughout the community until emergency medical professionals arrive.
This course combines instructor-led instruction, demonstrations, real-life emergency scenarios, and practical skill development. Participants will practice appropriate emergency-response techniques using training manikins, automated external defibrillator (AED) trainers, and first-aid equipment.
Course Topics Include:
- Recognizing an emergency and taking immediate action
- Maintaining personal safety and assessing the emergency scene
- Understanding consent, personal protective equipment, and exposure precautions
- Activating the Emergency Medical Services system and communicating effectively with 911
- Performing a primary assessment of an injured or ill person
- Recognizing the signs and symptoms of cardiac arrest
- Performing high-quality CPR
- Providing CPR for adults, children, and infants, as applicable to the selected course
- Using an automated external defibrillator safely and effectively
- Responding to conscious and unconscious choking emergencies
- Understanding the importance of early intervention and the Cardiac Chain of Survival
- Controlling life-threatening and non-life-threatening bleeding
- Recognizing and providing care for shock
- Responding to sudden illnesses, including heart attacks, strokes, seizures, diabetic emergencies, and fainting
- Recognizing and responding to severe allergic reactions
- Providing initial care for burns, wounds, and soft-tissue injuries
- Responding to suspected fractures, sprains, strains, and head, neck, or spinal injuries
- Recognizing and responding to heat-related and cold-related emergencies
- Responding appropriately to poisoning and other common medical emergencies
- Providing care until emergency medical personnel arrive
Students will participate in practical exercises and skill-assessment scenarios to demonstrate their ability to respond appropriately during an emergency. Participants must attend the complete course and successfully demonstrate all required knowledge and practical skills to qualify for certification.
Upon Successful Completion
Upon successful completion of all course requirements, students will receive a 2yr certification and will be registered in the American Red Cross training system. Certification is issued in accordance with the requirements of the applicable American Red Cross CPR/First Aid/AED program.

The DCJS 07R Firearms Retraining course is a required in-service program designed for certified armed security officers who must maintain their firearms endorsement in accordance with Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services standards.
This course reinforces critical firearm safety principles, legal updates, and proper handling techniques to ensure continued compliance and operational readiness. Students will review use-of-force guidelines, demonstrate safe firearm manipulation, and successfully complete the required firearms qualification course.
Upon successful completion, students will maintain their active firearms certification, allowing them to continue performing armed security duties within the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The DCJS 01I In-Service Unarmed Security Training course is a required refresher program for currently registered unarmed security officers in the Commonwealth of Virginia. This course, regulated by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, ensures officers remain compliant with state requirements while reinforcing essential knowledge and skills.
Students will review updates in Virginia laws and regulations, refresh their understanding of legal authority, patrol procedures, emergency response, and professional conduct. The course also emphasizes situational awareness, effective communication, and maintaining high standards of performance in the field.
Upon successful completion, students will maintain their active unarmed security officer registration and continue to operate in accordance with DCJS standards.
