My Biography
Elvin Lightfoot believes the best firearms instructors don’t simply teach shooting skills—they build confidence, competence, and a strong foundation in firearm safety.
A U.S. Navy veteran, Elvin served from 1989 to 1995 in Physical Security and Military Law Enforcement. That experience provided an early foundation in safety, responsibility, situational awareness, and disciplined firearms handling—principles that continue to influence his approach to firearms instruction today.
Elvin is an NRA- and USCCA-certified firearms instructor serving Prescott, Prescott Valley, and the surrounding communities of northern Arizona. He specializes in patient, individualized instruction for new and developing shooters and works closely with students to build skills at a pace appropriate for their experience, comfort level, and personal goals.
His approach is particularly well suited for first-time firearm owners, beginning handgun shooters, and students who have some shooting experience but want to become safer, more consistent, and more confident. Elvin believes strong defensive handgun skills begin with solid fundamentals rather than shortcuts. His instruction emphasizes safe firearm handling, handgun operation, marksmanship fundamentals, accuracy, firearm manipulation, responsible firearm ownership, and practical skill development.
To provide students with a clear path for continued development, Elvin has structured his handgun instruction around a three-course progression:
New Shooter Foundations – Pistol 1 introduces first-time and beginning shooters to firearm safety, handgun operation, shooting fundamentals, and their first carefully supervised live-fire experience.
Handgun Skills Development – Pistol 2 builds upon those fundamentals through continued work on accuracy, consistency, recoil management, follow-up shots, reloads, malfunction response, firearm manipulation, and increased confidence.
Defensive Handgun Fundamentals – Pistol 3 introduces responsible defensive-handgun concepts, including defensive accuracy, presentation, movement, verbal commands, threat identification, decision-making, and practical defensive shooting exercises.
Students who are ready to continue beyond these foundational courses can progress into more advanced defensive training, including the USCCA Defensive Pistol Program.
Elvin’s teaching style is calm, patient, and approachable. He believes students learn best in an environment where they are comfortable asking questions, making corrections, and developing skills without feeling rushed or intimidated. Student reviews frequently recognize his patience, clear explanations, encouragement, and willingness to spend additional one-on-one time helping students overcome difficulties and achieve meaningful improvement.
Elvin holds NRA instructor certifications in Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, and Range Safety Officer. His USCCA certifications include Concealed Carry & Home Defense Fundamentals, Defensive Pistol Program, Women’s Handgun & Self-Defense Fundamentals, and Range Safety Officer. He is also a GLOCK Certified Armorer.
Whether working with someone handling a handgun for the first time or helping an experienced shooter prepare to move into defensive handgun training, Elvin’s objective remains the same: help every student leave training safer, more knowledgeable, more capable, and more confident than when they arrived.
