Handgun Cleaning & Maintenance Class
Course Overview A clean, well-maintained firearm is a reliable firearm. In this class, students will learn how to safely disassemble, clean, and reassemble their handgun while gaining confidence in basic maintenance. Our instructors will walk you step-by-step through the process, ensuring you understand not only how to do it, but why each step matters.
What You’ll Learn – Step by Step
Safety First
Begin with unloading and verifying your firearm is safe to handle.
Learn the safety checks every gun owner should perform before beginning maintenance.
Introduction to Handgun Components
Review the major parts of a semi-automatic pistol and their functions.
Understand how these parts work together during operation.
Disassembly (Field Stripping)
Guided step-by-step breakdown of your specific handgun model.
Learn how to remove the slide, barrel, recoil spring/guide rod, and frame/receiver safely.
Explanation of how different makes/models may vary slightly.
Component Cleaning
Frame/Receiver: Wipe down exterior, clean magazine well, and focus on slide rails.
Slide: Clean the breech face, firing pin channel area, and all contact points.
Barrel: Use brushes and patches to clean the bore, feed ramp, and chamber thoroughly.
Recoil Spring & Guide Rod: Learn the proper way to clean and lightly lubricate without over-oiling.
Magazine: Learn why cleaning magazines is important and how to safely disassemble and clean the spring, follower, and interior.
Lubrication & Protection
Learn proper lubrication points to ensure reliable function without over-lubing.
Discuss how to protect your firearm from rust, carbon buildup, and long-term wear.
Reassembly
Step-by-step reassembly of your handgun.
Function checks to make sure the firearm is correctly and safely put back together.
Maintenance Tips & Best Practices
How often you should clean based on usage.
Storage tips to keep your handgun in top condition.
Common mistakes to avoid when cleaning or reassembling.
Class Goal: By the end of this session, students will confidently be able to disassemble their handgun, clean each component, properly lubricate, reassemble, and perform a function check. This class gives you the skills to keep your firearm reliable, safe, and ready when you need it.

Any rescheduling or class changes are at Sendero's and/or the Instructors discretion. Any class changes by non-member customers need to be made 48 hours or more in advance of a class; any class change requests by non-members within 48 hours are at the discretion of the Instructor and/or Sendero Shootings Sports.
What We'll Teach
Gear and Gadgets
Walk into any gun shop, and the variety of gear and gadgets available can be a bit overwhelming. Gun vaults, holsters, lights, lasers—where do you start? In this lesson, Michael Martin will explain each of those pieces of gear, and he’ll discuss the options you should consider when you’re ready to go shopping.
Additional Notes from Your Instructor
20% off on all Cleaning tools and kits the day of the event. Come with a good attitude and a willingness to learn. You will need your firearm (NO AMMUNITION) and a bag or case to put it in.
