The North Carolina Concealed Handgun Course is a state-mandated training requirement for anyone applying for a North Carolina Concealed Handgun Permit. But at Family Defender Institute of NC, we believe this course should be far more than a box-checking exercise.

This class is designed to ensure you understand:

North Carolina concealed carry laws — where you can carry, where you cannot, and how the law actually works in real life

Safe firearm handling and storage, including legal responsibilities

Use-of-force principles and decision-making under stress

Practical defensive considerations, not just theory

Your responsibilities before, during, and after a defensive encounter

The course includes:

A full 8 hours of instruction, as required by North Carolina law

Live-fire qualification, conducted safely and professionally

Clear guidance on the permit application process after you complete the course

This is instruction built for real people, not just experienced shooters. Whether you’re new to firearms or returning after years away, the course is structured to be clear, calm, professional, and confidence-building.

Whether you are a long-time rifle shooter or just getting into rifle shooting this course is for you. Learn the way bullets perform at distance, the drop all rounds encounter, the way wind affects your shots, the maximum distance you can shoot your target and more. In FDI’s Long Range Class we will be shooting at distances from 100 to 500 yards. Don’t go into this hunting season without being totally sure of your rifle and scope’s capabilities.

This class gives you all of the state required information, a test and qualification required to submit an application to your local NC Sheriff’s Office to request a concealed handgun permit. With our instructors’ combined 60 years + in NC Law, police interaction, military service, firearms and training, you will leave this class with more than a certificate; you will leave with confidence needed to safely carry a concealed pistol, protect yourself and your family. We specialize is new gun owners, new shooters and advanced shooters.

There is no substitute for in-person training with a certified firearms instructor. Every responsible gun owner should take an in-person class to truly sharpen his or her skills, build confidence and forge a protector mindset. This course includes two USCCAs in-person mini-courses as well as the qualification for Level One from the Protector Academy. Each participant will receive the Basic and Advanced Skills Course then fire the qualification for Level One. In most cases this is a ONE -ON-ONE class.

Ongoing in-person training is one of the most powerful ways we can strengthen ourselves as protectors. It is about more than simply refreshing our knowledge in a classroom. We must also dedicate ourselves to being lifelong learners. In-person courses allow you to customize your own learning experience, interact with other members of the protector community and discover new lessons from instructors who dedicate their lives to self-defense and firearms training. Requirements: • Complete Level One Training • Take a 4-hour in-person course with a certified firearms instructor. Add your course into your protector academy account after completion.

Course Overview: Defensive firearms training is not just about shooting hundreds of rounds. It is practicing real skills like reloading and clearing malfunctions under stress. We will simulate this stress with timed drills. But you are also responsible for every round you fire in a self-defense situation. So you must also accurately hit your target 100% of the time.

You have reached a point in your training where it is well worth diving deep into a firearms course. Short trips to the range are great, but a well-rounded firearms course is immensely empowering. You will become more confident and proficient.

This is a class designed for current NC Concealed Carry Permit holders or those that have at least completed the NC Concealed Carry Training Class. The Concealed Carry 2.0 class is designed to enhance the safety skills while instilling confidence in the carrier that they can carry, draw and employ their firearm in an emergency. Drawing the pistol from the holster, firing in self-defense and firing at distance. This is a 2-hour class followed by 4-hour range time. It is highly recommended that you fire the same ammo you carry, in this class. Because of the one-on-one training involved, this class is limited to 12 students.

Non-Lethal Tools For Self-Defense bridges the gap between doing nothing and using deadly force, an option that is vital for all protectors to have. Whether you need an alternative to firearms for personal reasons, or you’re a concealed carrier who wants the ability to protect in a wider variety of settings, this class is the perfect solution for those who seek an effective method for non-lethal self-defense. This class gives detailed information on how state law oversees Less-Lethal devices.

This course is specifically designed for students wanting to take the next step in being a confident, safe and skilled Family Defender.

The course will include training on shooting to get to cover, shooting around obstacles, shooting at distance, draw and movement, multiple targets, and more.

Each task we will be training on relates to real world shootings and how the defender came out on top.

REQUIREMENTS: To register you should have: attended FDI’s 2.0 course, or within the last 5 years, any course by Frank Protector, any Sig Sauer Academy course, any course by Massad Ayoob, any advanced course by Blue Ridge Marksmanship, Jericho Tactical, or Trace Armory or be a current USCCA Instructor or NRA Instructor or any current or retired (last 5 years) Law Enforcement Officer.

Can't get quite by the fair shooting and get to great shooting? Want to improve to make shooting more enjoyable? Want to feel more confident in your shooting abilities? This is the course for you! Our Review, Improve and Challenge Course is designed to give the student a clear vision of their current abilities and then improve their skills in the areas where it is needed most. Then allowing the student to demonstrate their new skills and build their confidence.

This class is a FREE REFRESHER for those that already have their NC Concealed Handgun Permit or they have already attended a NC Concealed Handgun Course. NO CERTIFICATE will be issued. YOU MUST REGISTER TO ATTEND. Numerous times in the past we have had students attend our course after not feeling confident they learned all they should in an earlier course elsewhere. Or there course was a number of years ago. The NC Concealed Handgun Law has changed 13 times since it became law in 1996. Because of this we have decided to offer this FREE course. It is true our instructors are professional educators first. Students should bring the NC Concealed Handgun Training Book they received at their original course with them to this course. If they did not receive this book there will be an option to purchase one before the start of class for $10.00.

Micro Pistol Course Small pistols are easy to carry, easy to conceal, and often the handgun a person is most likely to have with them when they need it. But because of their short barrels, small grips, and reduced size, these pistols require specific training to be carried and used safely and effectively. The FDI Micro Pistol Course is designed for students who carry or plan to carry a pistol with a 3.25-inch barrel or shorter. Whether you pocket carry or use a traditional holster, this course is built to help you better understand how to safely carry, present, and employ a micro pistol in a defensive situation. This is not a tactical course for SWAT-style shooters. This course is designed for the everyday concealed carrier who wants practical, confidence-building instruction with the firearm they are most likely to actually carry. Students will work on safe carry considerations, presentation of the pistol from concealment, recoil management, practical defensive accuracy, bullet selection, and understanding the strengths and limitations of these small defensive handguns. The goal is to help the student build real skill with the pistol they may depend on to protect themselves or their family. Micro pistols are convenient to carry, but convenience alone does not provide protection. Training does. FDI developed this course from decades of concealed carry experience and instruction with defensive pistols, including training devoted specifically to small handguns. This course is built for responsible armed citizens who want to carry with greater confidence, greater safety, and greater competence. Requirements: Must possess a valid NC Concealed Handgun Permit Pistol with a 3-inch barrel or shorter At least 2 magazines if using a semi-automatic pistol Students must follow the Four Universal Firearm Safety Rules at all times during the course

A church safety team is more than a group of people carrying firearms. It is a team entrusted with protecting a place of worship while preserving its welcoming character, exercising sound judgment, and responding responsibly when conditions become dangerous.

The Advanced Church Safety Team Range Train-Up and Qualification is a yearly training opportunity for current church safety team members who want to reinforce safe firearms handling, strengthen practical range skills, and maintain a higher standard of preparedness. The course is designed to help team members build calm, repeatable competence during training and prepare responsibly for the possibility of a deadly threat.

This is not simply a qualification on paper. It is an opportunity to review safety fundamentals, sharpen decision-making, identify areas that need additional instruction, and document annual training for the team’s training records. The goal is not bravado or fear. The goal is responsible preparation, disciplined teamwork, and the confidence that comes from continued learning and practice.

Church safety must also include clear roles, communication, situational awareness, de-escalation, emergency planning, medical coordination, and cooperation with local first responders. Firearms training is one part of a broader safety program—not a substitute for church policy, legal requirements, emergency planning, or coordination with law enforcement and EMS.

For church safety team members who understand that readiness is a responsibility, this annual train-up provides a focused opportunity to practice, qualify, and continue becoming the kind of calm, capable, and trustworthy protector their congregation can depend on.
