Cover stops incoming rounds. But you need to train effectively to be able to shoot from behind cover. The first rule is: Don’t crowd your cover. But training to stay back from cover while on a live-fire range is often difficult. Using the UTM target marking rounds allows you to shoot from behind cover without fear of ricochet or flying bullet fragments if you make an error.

Rolling out from behind cover exposes the least amount of your body to the attacker. Remember, have your gun up, then roll out until your sights are on target. Then fire. Then return to cover and roll out from a different location for the next shot.

Practice, Practice, Practice

You can train to shoot from behind cover in a dry-fire or laser ammo mode as well. Live ammo is not required. Clear your weapon and remove all ammo from the room. Adjust your feet, bring your gun up to your eyes and align the sights. Roll out by bending your front knee a little. Fire the shot when your sights find the target.
