My Biography

We believe deep in our souls that your training should be with the most "advanced" instructors you can find, the subject of protecting yourself and others is not a "beginner" subject. To that end we have attended thousands of hours of training over the last 30 years and write our own curriculum to help ensure it is the most current and relevant training possible. We will never take the "cookie cutter" approach with information and instruction technique that you could get from attending a 3-day instructor course yourself.
What does it take to be a “Firearms Instructor”? That’s a pretty tough question to answer. A “professional instructor” is built over time, they aren’t born. A “professional instructor” never stops learning and remains a constant student. A “professional instructor” has earned that title over many years of training and teaching.

Certainly, great instructors have many varying backgrounds. Some sadly are motivated by a quest for fame and fortune. Others are motivated by an extreme desire to share knowledge. Especially in the field of firearms instruction a diverse and intensive background should be the norm; even moreover when we are talking about Concealed Carry Permit instruction and the defensive use of firearms.

TO SCHEDULE A PRIVATE TRAIING SESSION OR CHECK AVAILABILITY PLEASE USE THE "EMAIL ME CLASS DETAILS" FEATURE OR CONTACT US BY PHONE.
We specialize in helping people learn to protect themselves and their families and one of the safest, most convenient and often fastest way is with individualized instruction.  We also understand that in some instances privacy and discretion are critical and open enrollment classes could compromise security.  Our discreet private sessions are conducted on a range facility that is not open to the general public and focus on a specific core area of firearms manipulation generally one core area per session.  We have found that sometimes in group classes with open enrollment, technique, concepts and understanding is sometimes jumbled up and missed in the more hectic paced learning.....  Private, focused instruction can help to solve that issue.

Each learning block is 2 hours (by appointment only) and specifically focused on the clients needs.

Personal instruction in a private session will drastically increase your individual skills with the personalized attention available in our one-on-one sessions. This is the absolute best way to learn safe and efficient gun handling; for beginner, intermediate or advanced shooters. Individualized instruction offers immediate improvement of basic and advanced skill sets, in a confidential and secure setting. This one-on-one attention to detail focused on your personal gun handling skills creates a positive and comfortable learning environment conducive to rapid improvement in a compressed time frame. Four to six hours of personal instruction could cover the same material as a typical two-day Group Class, without the added distraction of additional students.  Personal instruction is not restricted to the skill of a group class or lesson plan, rather we can cover in as much detail as is required areas such as but not limited to: General Firearm Safety, Firearm Manipulation, Basic Fundamentals, Presentations from a Holster, open and concealed, Reloads, Clearing Malfunctions, Multiple Target Engagements, Moving Targets, Use of Cover, Flashlights  and much more.

Our Personal Instruction/Private Session courses are 2 hours in duration without exception, but you can book multiple sessions back to back.  We find that couples or families often want to train together and you can add people to your private session as required.  In the end it is our intent that you create the comfortable learning environment that you desire with your family and friends as required.

Very often we find students who don't know what gear they need, or what equipment may or may not suit their individual requirements, we can almost always help with advice, loaner gear and equipment and our personal experiences.  If you aren't sure, please get with us ahead of time rather than rush out and spend money that you may later regret.

-ADVANCED- 40 HOURS This program is equally suited for the Faith Based Security Teams and Armed Educators as well as individuals interested in a comprehensive and detailed firearms program designed to provide a mastery of a basic set of lifesaving firearms skills through repetition designed to increase longer term skill retention. Our certification program starts with Missouri Concealed Carry and continues in several “beyond the permit” classes specifically developed to enhance lifesaving skills as they relate to using a handgun in the defense of human life. Includes "bonus" optional training blocks (3) to maximize individual learning efforts and skill retention.

Course Title: Handgun Level 1 Course description: Holsters and Handguns was originally developed as a "Basic Steps" program to introduce new shooters to techniques they hadn't been previously trained on. A presentation from a holster (drawing the firearm), types of reloads (tactical, emergency/speed), multiple shots on multiple targets and so on. We quickly discovered that the "basic steps" program was well suited for even more advanced students as a refresher program, and we scaled the program back creating Handgun Level 1. “An advanced application of a basic set of skills” starts with mastering those basic skills.
Grip Stance Aiming Trigger Manipulation Recoil Management Terminal Learning Objective: Upon completion of the Advanced Performance Shooting "Handgun Level 1" course the successful student will have a more complete understanding of what it takes to safely and efficiently present a firearm and achieve the desired hits on a target. Students will participate in a variety of live fire drills designed to test their understanding of accuracy and their ability to apply a basic set of skills to achieve the desired accuracy requirement. Students will participate in multiple exercises repeated several times in an effort to start to anchor the desired set of skills. Successful students will leave with an understanding of what they individually need to practice in order to enhance their personal skills. Enabling Learning Objectives: Demonstrate knowledge and application of safe weapons handling skills. Perform ready positions training exercises. Perform malfunction clearance exercises Perform emergency and rapid reload exercises Fired approx 250 rounds in various live fire exercises designed to help develop of basic set of skills. Student Required Equipment: Concealable type handgun (loaners are available as required) with appropriate magazines as required. Enough magazines to bring 50 rounds loaded to the firing line is a huge help but not a requirement.
250 rounds of safe, serviceable ammunition Sturdy footwear (no open toe) Eye Protection Hearing Protection Hat (optional) Sunscreen Weather appropriate attire

Course Title: Handgun Level 2 Course description: Handgun Level 2 starts where we leave off in Handgun Level 1. Primarily focused on a proper presentation of the handgun from a concealed holster, we build on the basic set of skills we have started to master in Handgun Level 1. Presentation from the holster Reloading the handgun Multiple Shots on target Introduction to multiple target engagements We very firmly believe that “advanced” skills with a handgun are better described as an “advanced application of a basic set of skills” and we continue to maintain our focus of the required skills of , grip, stance, aiming, trigger manipulation and recoil management.

Terminal Learning Objective: Upon completion of the Advanced Performance Shooting "Handgun Level 2" course the successful student will have a more complete understanding of what it takes to safely and efficiently present a firearm from a holster from concealment and achieve the desired hits on a target. Students will participate in a variety of live fire drills designed to test their understanding of accuracy and their ability to apply a basic set of skills to achieve the desired accuracy requirement. Students will participate in multiple exercises repeated several times in an effort to start to anchor the desired set of skills. Enabling Learning Objectives: Demonstrate knowledge and application of safe weapons handling skills. Perform ready positions training exercises. Perform presentation from the holster, open and concealed, exercises. Perform malfunction clearance exercises Perform emergency and rapid reload exercises Fired approx 250 rounds in various live fire exercises designed to help further develop a basic set of skills. Student Required Equipment: Concealable type handgun (loaners are available as required) with appropriate magazines as required. Enough magazines to bring 50 rounds loaded to the firing line is a huge help but not a requirement.
250 rounds of safe, serviceable ammunition Safe/serviceable holster suitable for concealment and mounted on a sturdy belt. Holster must retain its shape when the firearm is removed. Sturdy footwear (no open toe) Eye Protection Hearing Protection Hat (optional) Sunscreen Weather appropriate attire

Course Title: Handgun Level 3 Course description: Handgun Level 3 builds on those skills learned in levels 1 and 2 with the addition of movement considerations, multiple shots on multiple targets and increased engagement distances. We very firmly believe that “advanced” skills with a handgun are better described as an “advanced application of a basic set of skills” and we continue to maintain our focus of the required skills of, grip, stance, aiming, trigger manipulation and recoil management.

Terminal Learning Objective: Upon completion of the Advanced Performance Shooting "Handgun Level 3" course the successful student will have a more complete understanding of what it takes to safely and efficiently present a firearm from a holster from concealment and achieve the desired hits on a target at distances from virtually contact out to 25 yds. Students will participate in a variety of live fire drills designed to test their understanding of accuracy and their ability to apply a basic set of skills to achieve the desired accuracy requirement. Students will participate in multiple exercises repeated several times in an effort to anchor the desired set of skills. Successful students will leave with an understanding of what they individually need to practice in order to enhance their personal skills. Standard training baseline will consist of variations from our 1 of 100 Concealed Carry Standards.

In our Missouri Concealed Carry course, we spend the majority of the time in the classroom in discussion/conference covering in great detail the statute requirements outlined by Missouri. In this program the only live fire portions are the required practice and qualification, and each student only fires the required 40 rounds of ammunition. This is by no means a "basic" cookie cutter program, far exceeding that which most other programs cover in part due to the instructor experience level we bring to the table. Even if a student has participated in another Concealed Carry program, we guarantee a new learning experience in our constantly updated program. We aren't teaching from a book produced out of state and designed to cover several state requirements, rather we have designed our curriculum to far exceed the minimum requirements.

Students will at a minimum participate in the following discussions, demonstrations and practical applications:

(1) Handgun safety in the classroom, at home, on the firing range and while carrying the firearm. (2) A physical demonstration performed by the applicant that demonstrated his or her ability to safely load and unload either a revolver or a semiautomatic pistol and demonstrated his or her marksmanship with either firearm. (3) The basic principles of marksmanship. (4) Care and cleaning of concealable firearms. (5) Safe storage of firearms at home. (6) The requirements of this state for obtaining a concealed carry permit from the sheriff of the individual's county of residence. (7) The laws relating to firearms as prescribed in chapter 571, RSMo; (8) The laws relating to the justifiable use of force as prescribed in chapter 563, RSMo; (9) A live firing exercise of sufficient duration for each applicant to fire either a revolver or a semiautomatic pistol, from a standing position or its equivalent, a minimum of twenty rounds from the handgun at a distance of seven yards from a B-27 silhouette target or an equivalent target; and (10) A live fire test administered to the applicant while the instructor was present of twenty rounds from either a revolver or a semiautomatic pistol from a standing position or its equivalent at a distance from a B-27 silhouette target, or an equivalent target, of seven yards

The "Deliberate Responder" Training Package is unique in the firearms training industry and equally suited regardless of skill level for anyone interested in learning to better protect themselves or others.
In keeping with the highest possible standards of performance this class is broken down into 2 separate classroom session focused on the "Active Shooter Problem" with in depth analysis of past events based on Ed Monk's (Last Resort Firearms Training) excellent research. Each student will be an active participant deciding their individual best course of action to solve the potentially unique threat they most likely face. 2 separate range sessions will focus on individual skill assessment, providing each student with a personalized "shooting solution" based on their own performance abilities in the 1st session. The 2nd session will stress and challenge the individual performance standards thru detailed and progressively designed live fire scenarios.

Course Title: Handgun Level 4 Course description: Handgun Level could be considered a culminating ever, rather it builds upon and tests those skills learned in previous training. Handgun Level 4 is a mini competitive event structured as an ever changing challenge designed around a practical shooting venue.
We very firmly believe that “advanced” skills with a handgun are better described as an “advanced application of a basic set of skills” and we continue to maintain our focus of the required skills of, grip, stance, aiming, trigger manipulation and recoil management.

Terminal Learning Objective: Upon completion of the Advanced Performance Shooting "Handgun Level 4" course the successful student will have a more complete understanding of what it takes to safely and efficiently present a firearm from a holster from concealment and achieve the desired hits on a target at distances from virtually contact out to 25+ yds. Students will participate in a variety of live fire stages designed to test their understanding of accuracy and their ability to apply a basic set of skills at speed in order to achieve the desired accuracy requirement. Students will participate in a minimum of 3 stages events, a “field course” a “speed shooting” and a “falling steel” event. Successful students will leave with an understanding of what they individually need to practice in order to enhance their personal skills. This course also represents an introduction to the sport of “practical shooting” and no two iterations of this program will be exactly the same and student experience and results will vary accordingly. The “tactical vs practical” aspect of the practical shooting sports will be addressed as part of the overall learning experience.
Enabling Learning Objectives: Demonstrate knowledge and application of safe weapons handling skills. Perform ready positions training exercises. Perform presentation from the holster, open and concealed, exercises. Perform malfunction clearance exercises Perform emergency and rapid reload exercises Perform multiple shot and multiple target engagement exercises Perform movement exercises Fired approx 250 rounds in various live fire exercises designed to help further develop a basic set of skills.

We will run 4 or 5 progressively based "Active Shooter Response" scenarios, designed to allow students to identify and solve threat-based problems. Students should have attended Handgun Level 1 or similar program and be familiar with their own skill set limitations.

10 years ago the APS Training Group stood alone in the training community as a training and practice group. Version 2.0 will pick up where Covid and the ammunition crunch put a stop to our original efforts. Each session is unique and stands alone as a "practice" session with one focused concept of exercise, in effect organized private training on a specific area in a small group setting. 100-200 rounds and not more than 2 hours, some sessions depending on the specific topic could be more or less, slightly shorter or longer in duration. Low light progams (late Fall/Winter) require a hand held light.

In these 2-hour programs we will discuss "Use of Force" and related concerns. We will utilize video of specific incidents from around the world to build discussions focused on: Left of the Bang- those things we could do to "avoid" the deadly force encounter. Center of the Bang- those things we could do to help ensure we "win" a deadly force encounter. Right of the Bang- those things we should consider in order to "survive" a deadly force encounter. Specific topics and discussions will vary greatly but will include concepts and ideas such as: Situational Awareness Education and Purposeful Practice Best practices in the Aftermath and more It is possible that specific event discussions run into follow on events. Learning to better protect ourselves and our families is a journey.

Handguns come in all shapes and sizes, just like people. In this short program we will look at the key aspects of proper fit, form and function as it relates to selecting a handgun for self-defense.
This interactive class will include hands on "work" with several makes, models and types of handguns in order to help determine what might be the best choice for an individual. Topics and discussions can include but are not limited to: Size/Caliber selection Ballistics as they relate to personal defense Less lethal options Parts, pieces and types of firearms Safety considerations Safe Storage of Firearms Cleaning and Maintaining handguns intended for personal defense.

We are proud to partner with Amazing Grace Fellowship Church in Crocker, Missouri to offer this program at no charge for Churches, Church Security Teams and Individuals alike. This overview/discussion isn't limited in scope but we will keep our efforts focused on how to help solve the "Active Killer Problem" should your place of worship come under attack. We will discuss "leading practices" as they relate to what type of firearm to carry, how to carry it, and how "good" you need to be. No doubt part of the discussion will turn to when is a "Deadly Force Solution" the only option and how we protect those that volunteer to protect the congregation. Missouri Concealed Carry is the legal minimum first step, without the permit a firearm can't legally be carried in a place of worship. In this program we will help dispel some of the myths, rumors and inconsistencies often stemming from certification classes themselves.
We will use some graphic videos as part of the basis for our discussion and some might find the content (church/school shootings) disturbing.

This is an in-depth 16+ hour course that covers all the essential skills involved in fighting with a handgun specifically focused on “Self-Awareness”. We will start each morning in the classroom at 8am and cover a diverse range of topics such as: Background of Deliberate Responder Program and Performance Based Training Historical View of Modern Firearms Training and Evolution Training to a Higher Standard Deadly Force Decision Making In Depth Analysis of Varying Incidents (Videos) and Discussion

Live Fire Topics and drills covered in this course will include: Rapid presentation from concealed carry/duty carry configurations Efficient gun handling techniques, designed to work under stress Keeping the gun running/malfunctions and ammunition management Balance of speed and accuracy drills as they relate to size and distance Shooting effectively with one hand, with either hand Expect to fire about 500-650 rounds of ammunition. This course is designed for those that carry a firearm concealed, but LE Duty Rigs are also allowed. Please be advised we mean concealed properly.
You will need a good handgun, holster, belt, and magazine pouch, at least three magazines, a ball cap and concealment garment (vest, jacket, windbreaker, etc, pullover garments are fine), eye and ear protection, and rain gear (we train rain or shine). A cooler with soft drinks, water, snacks and lunch will be needed, for lunch on site. It is a good idea to bring a second gun just like your primary, in case something breaks on your primary gun and any backup support gear as required. Please bring good quality ammunition. You will shoot better, your gun will function better, and you will learn faster. Leather or kydex holsters are fine—PLEASE NO flimsy nylon or cloth holsters. We will do all that we can to help provide loaner gear as required, but we won’t allow training with unsafe/unpractical gear, guns or equipment. Not properly equipped isn’t a sufficient reason for a refund, when in doubt please check with us before registering.

We recommend an additional 30 rounds of your normal carry ammunition to be used during the 1of100 Deliberate Responder Standards exercise, you can shoot training ammunition, but this is a good time to cycle ammunition and ensure your carry ammo is hitting where you expect it to hit.

"It was a good class. Covered safety material, legal information, gun handling, went over some case studies, and had some field training. It’s a very good class for a beginner to start learning or an intermediate/pro to review some safety material. Overall, a very effective class and even though Missouri does not require a concealed permit, this class is very useful for any responsible gun owner. "

"We are very happy to have had you in class today and we look forward to training with you in the future. We do not take lightly the responsibility given us when we students put their trust in us and work our hardest to ensure we exceed expectations. We believe there is a line that separates Instructors and Teachers, teaching is our passion and we understand that our "topic" is potentially a matter of life or death. "

"Jim did an amazing job helping our security team understand that we need to take this seriously! The videos were great teaching tools too! The way Jim broke them down and showed us individual different situations within each video was perfect! This training is something every church security team should have!"
