**This course covers group and individual range training that must be scheduled accordingly.

Although DPS has stated repeatedly (since 1995) in LTC instructor classes that the LTC “demonstration of proficiency” is NOT intended to teach beginners how to shoot a handgun, many (normally part-time) instructors continue to mix very inexperienced (and sometimes pure novice) shooters on the firing line with experienced shooters. Therefore, “shooting tests” in many range environments often creates anxiety for all participants, with many failures. As such, we offer the following approximately 1.5 hour private class for beginners. Let us help you get familiar with your newly purchased or rented firearm and get on target.

Serpa holsters or similar holsters that use the trigger finger to deactivate a retention device are NOT allowed

Student Level: “Beginner”

This approximately, 2-hour class is geared for novice shooters to get a brief exposure to the shooting sports using five of our rental handguns. Example of handguns:

  1. .22 Rimfire Single Action Revolver (Heritage) with 6″ barrel and 10 rounds of .22 LR ammo
  2. .380 Semi-Automatic Ruger Lcp Pocket Pistol and 10 rounds of .380 ammo
  3. .38 Special Double Action Smith & Wesson Airweight 637, Revolver with 10 rounds of .38 ammo
  4. .380 Semi-Automatic Pistol (Bersa Thunder) with 10 rounds of .380 ammo
  5. 9mm Semi-Automatic Pistol (Ruger P89) with 4.5″ barrel and 10 rounds of 9mm ammo
  • Use of Eye and Ear Protection
  • Targets appropriate for training/practice purposes
  • Instructor’s loading and set up of handguns so coaching is focused primary on students simply safely firing their first shots Eye and ear protection are available at no extra charge if students do not have their own. If planning to shoot a semi-automatic pistol, no sandals, halter tops or other clothing that can readily catch hot brass. A baseball cap and long sleeve shirt are recommended.

Cost, includes use of firearms and ammunition described above Note There are over 30 firearms to choose from. This package can be modified to fit your specific needs.

Student Level: “Beginner”

The fundamentals of Mindset, Safe Gun-handling, and Marksmanship are covered in lecture while the practical aspects are taught & practiced on the range.

Serpa holsters or similar holsters that use the trigger finger to deactivate a retention device are NOT allowed

Student Level: “ intermediate to Advanced”

This course begins with the evaluation of the performance exhibited at the conclusion of Defensive Handgun I (or equivalent course), and progresses quickly into an emphasis on applying more advanced techniques under more difficult real-life situations. The development of Reflexive / Subconscious ability is taught.

Serpa holsters or similar holsters that use the trigger finger to deactivate a retention device are NOT allowed

Student Level: “ Intermediate, to Advanced”

This intermediate-advanced level course is designed for shooters who have attended our Defensive Handgun I and II or a comparable and verified level of training from a certified instructor or academy we approve prior to registration. Primary objectives: #1. Skills and knowledge application necessary to effectively carry a holstered, concealed handgun on a regular basis.

#2. Conduct a thorough skills review for those who lack the time to practice regularly, or are finding it difficult to conduct reality based practice at their regular range.

We start with a discussion of the equipment and procedures relevant to concealed carry and a overview of our range commands, procedures and safety rules. We then progress into a skills review/assessment which focuses on good technical shooting and gun handling. This is followed by reviewing and shooting selected drills from our Defensive Handgun I and II programs. These selected exercises will focus on the most likely real world scenarios that cannot be practiced on a typical public shooting range and on situations where the help and expertise of a qualified instructor is most valuable.

In 2013, the Texas Legislature passed two separate solutions to allow educators and/or school district employees to carry handguns on campus. The options were called the "School Marshal Plan" and the "School Safety Officer Training (Guardian Plan)"

They both are for the protection of students and have different intentions.

The School Marshall Plan was intended to give educators/employees armed law enforcement capabilities and responsibilities. On the other hand, the School Safety Officer Training, also known as the Guardian Plan was intended to solely to provide hand picked armed administrators, educators, or employees the ability to defend themselves and students in the event of an Active Shooter or "Active Killer" situation.

The overall objective of this course is to educate staff on the responsibilities related to school safety who are employees of a school district or open-enrollment charter school who hold a license to carry a handgun.

The following prerequisites MUST be met: *Possess a valid Texas License to Carry/ CHL *Pass a pre-qualification written exam based on current LTC/CHL rules and regulations *Pass the LTC/CHL live fire qualification at 90% (225 out of 250). Pre-qualification will be conducted at beginning of Day 1

Course Agenda: Day 1 (8 hours) **50 round live fire Pre-Qualification- 90% (225) score on LTC qualification

**Pre-Qualification Written Test- based on existing LTC laws and regulations (90% required)

**Training from certified School Safety Instructors using D.P.S. curriculum

Day 2 (8 hours) **Scenario Training by a Certified School Safety Instructor

**Shooting Under Duress Training

**Shooting under duress 200 round live-fire proficiency using hostage targets

**Final written exam (90% required)

The four Core Topics covered as required by the Texas Department of Public Safety (D.P.S.) are:

  1. Protection of Students
  2. Interaction of license holders with first responders 3.Tactics for denying an intruder entry into a classroom or school facility
  3. Methods for increasing a license holder's accuracy with a handgun while under duress

This course provides a level of training above and beyond what is required in Texas. Not only does it give the participant a liability shield against claims, but it gives the administrators a idea of the skill level of their faculty and staff members.

Safe storage: This section of the class will teach you how to safely store your handgun when it is not in use. You will learn about different storage methods, such as gun safes, trigger locks, and cable locks.

In addition to these topics, the LTC class may also cover other topics, such as the history of gun control in the United States, the psychology of violence, and the use of force rules.

The LTC class will be taught by certified LTC instructors.                                    After you complete the LTC class, you will need to pass a written examination and a shooting proficiency test. The written examination covers the material that was taught in the class.

Once you have passed the written examination and shooting proficiency test, apply for your license. Once issued, Your LTC will be valid for five years.
