Washington, D.C. Concealed Carry Pistol License (CCPL) Training Course

Course Overview: The D.C. Concealed Carry Pistol License (CCPL) Training Course is designed for individuals seeking to obtain or renew a concealed carry permit in Washington, D.C. This course meets all training requirements set forth by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and ensures participants have the knowledge, skills, and legal understanding necessary to responsibly carry a firearm in the District.

Course Duration:     •    Initial Applicants: 16 hours (typically completed over two days)     •    Renewal Applicants: 4 hours

Course Content:     1.    Firearm Safety & Handling     •    Fundamental firearm safety rules     •    Proper handling, loading, unloading, and storage of a handgun     •    Safe transportation of a firearm in D.C.     2.    D.C. Firearm Laws & Use of Force     •    District of Columbia firearm laws and regulations     •    Federal firearm laws applicable to D.C. residents and permit holders     •    Use of force laws, including self-defense, deadly force, and duty to retreat     3.    Concealed Carry Responsibilities     •    Where and when concealed carry is permitted     •    Prohibited locations and restrictions under D.C. law     •    Interaction with law enforcement while carrying a concealed firearm     4.    Marksmanship & Handgun Operation     •    Fundamentals of shooting (grip, stance, sight alignment, trigger control)     •    Drawing from a holster and proper concealed carry techniques     •    Malfunction drills and defensive shooting techniques     5.    Live-Fire Qualification     •    Mandatory MPD-approved shooting qualification course     •    Participants must demonstrate proficiency in shooting and safe firearm handling     6.    Situational Awareness & Conflict De-escalation     •    Strategies to avoid and de-escalate confrontations     •    Proper mindset and decision-making under stress     7.    Permit Application Process & Renewal Requirements     •    Step-by-step guidance on applying for the D.C. CCPL     •    Fingerprinting and background check requirements     •    Understanding the “Good Reason” clause and updates to permit policies

Prerequisites:     •    Must be at least 21 years old.     •    Must be a D.C. resident or have a valid reason for carrying in D.C.     •    Must not have any disqualifying criminal convictions.     •    Must pass a background check conducted by the Metropolitan Police Department.

Certification: Upon successful completion, participants will receive a D.C. Concealed Carry Certificate, which must be submitted with the MPD CCPL application.

This course ensures compliance with D.C. firearms laws while equipping applicants with the knowledge and skills needed to safely and lawfully carry a concealed firearm in the District.

Cancellation Policy: Students are required to cancel at least 48 hours in advance of a class date in order to receive a full refund. Classes cancelled less than 48 hours before the class will not be refunded.

This course is a complete guide to understanding the basics of firearms ownership, safety, and nomenclature, and how it applies to home- or self-defense. After this class, students will feel confident to act as their family’s first line of defense in the event of a home invasion or other critical incident.
