What You'll Learn

Please read through for important class details. This is a 16-hour course (two days, one right after the other, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. each day, starting at Voodoo Firearms, with 20 minutes for lunch) that fulfills the Illinois State Police requirement to apply for your concealed carry license (CCL). On the second half of Day Two, there is a shooting qualification portion that will take place at the Diamond Indoor Trap and Pistol Range in Diamond. Because there is a shooting qualification requirement, there is a reasonable expectation that you are fairly proficient with a handgun prior to taking a concealed carry course. If you do not have experience shooting handguns, we would highly recommend our Basic Handgun Course and/or booking a private lesson prior to taking this class. You must be able to pass the shooting qualification on the first try or you will have to take the entire course again. Upon completion, the student will receive the certificate required to apply for your CCL. The course fee includes your B27 target and range fees, but not the ammo needed or the fees required by the ISP to submit your application.

ALL STUDENTS MUST HAVE VALID FOID CARD OR HAVE ALREADY MADE APPLICATION FOR YOUR FOID AND BE ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE YOUR FOID IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CLASS. NO REFUNDS WILL BE GIVEN TO STUDENTS WHO DO NOT CURRENTLY HAVE A VALID FOID OR HAVE NOT ALREADY MADE APPLICATION OR ARE NOT ELIGIBLE.

PLEASE DO NOT BRING YOUR FIREARM OR AMMUNITION INTO THE CLASSROOM.

Class starts promptly at 8:00 a.m. Please plan to arrive at Voodoo Firearms a few minutes early so that we can start on time. We will work in the classroom all day on Saturday. On Sunday, we will meet at the classroom and work for a few hours until we head to the indoor range in Diamond (20 minutes away) for the shooting qualification portion. (Diamond Indoor Trap and Pistol Range is located at 2155 E. Division Street in Diamond). When we finish at the range, we will return to the shop to cover the remaining material that includes the Illinois laws that apply to your CCL, and issue your certificate that you will upload into the Illinois State Police portal when you apply online for your license.

I am required by law to cover a certain amount of material. If you are not present for the entire class, you will not be issued a certificate of completion. If you show up late, you may be turned away and asked to reschedule. I cannot risk my accreditations by certifying those who are not in attendance for the entire class, or people who are absent from any significant portion of the class.

What to bring: -Valid photo ID -Your FOID card (if you already have it) -Notebook and pen if you want to take notes -Minimum 50 rounds of ammo (Brass casing pistol ammo only. No steel cased, armor piercing, or tracer ammo permitted). You might want to load your magazines in advance to save time at the range. Ammunition may be purchased at our store after class on Saturday. You may use a speed loader if preferred, but you must be able to show me that you are able to manually load and unload your firearm as part of the range requirements. -Eye and ear protection. (inside-the-ear earplugs are NOT allowed at this range. You must have the full over-the-ear type. They can be purchased at our store or rented at the range) -LUNCH (we have a small beverage fridge and microwave for your use) -Snacks and drinks are permitted in class but not on the firing range. -UNLOADED AND CASED FUNCTIONAL PISTOL. You can even use the box your pistol came in if needed. (Semi-automatic or revolver. Revolvers are allowed but not recommended due to the amount of time it can take to reload. No antiques.) If you do not yet own a firearm, please give me a call to make arrangements.

Please leave your firearm and ammo locked in your vehicle during class time. Please understand that because this is a classroom training environment, this will help to ensure that there are no accidents. During class, I will let you know when you should retrieve your firearm from your vehicle.

Dress Code: AT THE RANGE: Flat soled shoes only. NO open-toe shoes. NO low-cut shirts. I recommend long pants that go over your shoes, especially if you’re wearing boots. This dress code is to prevent hot shell casings from falling into your boots, down your shirt, etc. during the shooting portion. You may wear whatever you want during classroom time.

What Will the Class Will Cover: Hands-on classroom learning and range time. Topics covered include: safe gun handling, pistol parts and operation, ammunition, defensive shooting fundamentals, range rules, proper grip and stance, clearing and cleaning the pistol, conflict avoidance, situational awareness, legal use of force and deadly force, violent encounters and the aftermath, understanding fight or flight, laws regarding concealed carry, all applicable State and Federal laws relating to the ownership, storage, cleaning, carry, and transportation of a firearm, instruction on the appropriate and lawful interaction with law enforcement while transporting or carrying a concealed firearm, instruction on prohibited areas and the parking lot exceptions, any new laws, review of the F.O.I.D. Act, use of force in defense of a person, dwelling, of other property, unlawful use of weapons, definition of a dwelling, aggressor, forcible felony and unlawful use of weapons pursuant to the ILCS.

What is the shooting qualification requirement? 10 rounds at 5 yards, 10 rounds at 7 yards, 10 rounds at 10 yards on a B27 silhouette target, with a 70% accuracy. (21 out of 30). I will provide your target for you. There may not be an opportunity for much, if any, practice due to class size. If you feel you need some practice, please do so beforehand.

Safety Policy: There are no compromises on safety. Safety is a critical aspect of all classes and unsafe or disruptive behavior in class or on the range will result in dismissal. In the event you are dismissed due to a safety issue, you will not be refunded. The instructor has sole discretion in determining if you have engaged in unsafe or disruptive behavior. -Treat all firearms as if they were loaded AT ALL TIMES. -Never point your firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy. -Keep your finger off the trigger and outside of the trigger guard until your sights are on the target and you are ready to fire. -Be sure of your target and what is BEYOND your target. -All additional private range rules apply. These will be provided to you in class.

Class Etiquette: No question is a dumb question. Although we have much material to cover legally, I encourage questions and discussions, so please be respectful of all students. Not everyone has the same level of knowledge and experience. My goal is to provide a welcoming environment. Consequently, please keep discussions regarding politics to a minimum, and geared toward facts of law to the greatest extent possible.

Cancellation Policy: Students must notify us if they need to cancel or reschedule AT LEAST 48 HOURS BEFORE the class date if they will not be in attendance, otherwise the student will forfeit their refund. When you notify us of your need to cancel or reschedule, students should let us know if they would like to be refunded immediately or if they prefer to use the reschedule option. Refunds will not be issued at a later date. If you cancel less than 48 hours from the class start time, a refund is not an option. Only a reschedule is an option. Students will be permitted a ONE-TIME class reschedule to be used within 6 months of the original class date. Additional scheduling will not be permitted and will result in the forfeiture of the cost of the class. In the event the instructor needs to cancel the class, we will work with you to find an agreed upon future class date and the policy above will apply to any future cancelling or rescheduling. Receive 5% off firearms and 10% off ammunition or accessories in store at Voodoo Firearms for 30 days after registration. Use of this discount will void any refund of class fees if you cancel your class registration.

Cancellation Policy: Students must cancel or reschedule AT LEAST 48 HOURS BEFORE the class date otherwise the student will forfeit their refund. Students will be permitted a ONE-TIME class reschedule if the reschedule is made at least 48 hours before the ORIGINAL class date. Additional scheduling will not be permitted and will result in the forfeiture of the cost of the class. Students who fail to reschedule or cancel within 48 hours of the ORIGINAL class date will not be eligible for a refund. In the event the instructor needs to cancel the class, we will work with you to find an agreed upon future class date and the policy above will apply to any future cancelling or rescheduling.
