What You'll Learn
Course Overview The USCCA Range Safety Officer (RSO) Certification is a comprehensive training program designed to prepare individuals to safely and effectively manage a shooting range. This course equips candidates with the knowledge, skills, and attitude required to supervise shooters, enforce range safety rules, identify and mitigate risks, and handle range emergencies. Whether you are looking to volunteer at your local club or seeking professional employment at a commercial range, this course provides the industry-recognized credentials you need.
Prerequisites: Participants must be at least 21 years of age, legally allowed to possess a firearm, and possess a solid foundational knowledge of firearm safety and operation. Also some kind of prior basic firearms safety and/or training. Course Structure This certification is broken down into four distinct phases to ensure a well-rounded understanding of range management and safety protocols.
1. Classroom Instruction The foundation of the RSO course takes place in the classroom, where candidates will dive into the theory and administrative responsibilities of range safety. The Role of the RSO: Understanding the duties, responsibilities, and mindset required to be an effective Range Safety Officer. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): How to read, understand, and enforce range-specific SOPs and safety rules. Range Inspections & Rules: Protocols for opening and closing a range, inspecting backstops and berms, and managing the firing line. Emergency Procedures: Developing and implementing emergency response plans for medical incidents, natural disasters, and firearm-related accidents. Firearm Stoppages and Malfunctions: Identifying the differences between misfires, hang-fires, and squib loads across various firearm platforms.
2. Practical Skills Application Knowledge is put to the test in a controlled, non-live-fire environment. Candidates will engage in hands-on exercises and role-playing scenarios to build confidence. Conducting Range Briefings: Students will practice delivering clear, concise, and authoritative safety briefings to groups of "shooters." Identifying Safety Violations: Instructors will simulate common safety infractions (e.g., breaking the 180-degree rule, finger on the trigger, sweeping) for candidates to identify and correct politely but firmly. Clearing Malfunctions: Hands-on practice with dummy ammunition (snap caps) to safely take control of and clear various firearm platforms (pistols, rifles, shotguns) that have malfunctioned. Simulations: Students will experience high quality live action simulated range situations to help improve their skills.
3. Live Fire Range Application Moving from the classroom to an active firing line, candidates will apply their skills in a real-world environment under the supervision of a USCCA Instructor. Line Management: Candidates will take turns acting as the primary RSO on an active firing line, controlling the flow of shooters and calling range commands (e.g., "Cease Fire," "Make Ready"). Active Supervision: Monitoring live shooters for safe gun handling, proper stance, and adherence to range rules. Real-Time Intervention: Safely stepping in to assist shooters experiencing actual stoppages or technical difficulties during live-fire exercises, ensuring the muzzle remains pointed in a safe direction at all times. 4. Written Knowledge Exam To earn the USCCA RSO credential, candidates must demonstrate their mastery of the material through a formal assessment. Comprehensive Testing: A multiple-choice and true/false examination covering SOPs, emergency procedures, range commands, and malfunction clearing. Passing Requirement: Candidates must achieve a minimum passing score (typically 80% or higher) to prove their competence and readiness to hold the RSO title.
