What You'll Learn
Most violent encounters occur during periods of reduced visibility. Darkness, low-light environments, poor weather, and limited illumination significantly increase the complexity of identifying threats, making decisions, and effectively employing a firearm in a defensive situation.
The NGI Low Light & Night Fire Skills Course is an intensive 6-hour training program designed to teach students how to safely and effectively operate firearms under low-light and nighttime conditions. This course combines classroom instruction, practical exercises, and live-fire range training to develop the critical skills necessary to identify threats, make sound decisions, and accurately engage targets when visibility is compromised.
Whether you are an armed citizen, security professional, first responder, or law enforcement officer, this course provides practical, real-world techniques that can be immediately applied for personal protection, professional readiness, and defensive preparedness.
Students will learn:
• The realities of low-light and nighttime defensive encounters • Human performance factors and physiological effects of stress in darkness • Threat identification and target discrimination • Legal and ethical considerations of defensive force in low-light conditions • Principles of flashlight use and illumination techniques • Handheld flashlight selection and equipment considerations • Weapon-mounted light selection and operation • Search techniques and environmental awareness • Defensive movement and positioning in low-light environments • Use of cover and concealment during reduced visibility • Communication and decision-making under stress
Live-Fire Training Includes:
• Flashlight shooting techniques • Harries, FBI, Neck Index, and Modified FBI methods • Weapon-mounted light operation and employment • Target identification drills • Threat versus non-threat decision-making exercises • Accuracy drills under reduced lighting conditions • Movement and engagement exercises • Use of cover during low-light encounters • One-handed shooting techniques • Malfunction clearances in darkness • Reloading techniques under limited visibility • Defensive scenario-based exercises
Advanced Topics Include:
• White light discipline • Managing visual adaptation and night vision • Identifying unknown contacts • Home defense considerations • Multiple-threat engagements • Low-light defensive tactics • Integrating optics and red dot sights in reduced-light environments • Defensive mindset and situational awareness
Students will participate in progressively challenging live-fire exercises designed to build confidence, competence, and decision-making abilities in realistic low-light environments.
