What You'll Learn
This 4-hour course is designed to meet Colorado SB25-003 firearms safety training requirements for individuals who have previously completed a Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) recognized Hunter Education course.
Prerequisites:
Under Colorado SB25-003, students must first obtain a Firearms Safety Course Eligibility Card from their county sheriff before they can enroll in either the Basic or Extended course.
According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), the process is:
Apply online: Create an account and submit an application through the Colorado Firearms Safety System (FSS). https://cpw.state.co.us/specified-semiautomatic-firearms
Complete a name-based background check: Follow the applicant's county sheriff's instructions for obtaining and submitting the required background check.
Provide identification: Present a valid government-issued photo ID to the county sheriff's office.
Pay required fees: The CPW fee is $52, plus the county sheriff's processing fee, which varies by county.
Obtain sheriff approval: The sheriff reviews the application to determine whether the applicant may lawfully possess firearms and meets the eligibility requirements.
Receive the Eligibility Card: Once approved, the applicant receives an eligibility card valid for five years. The instructor must verify the card through the FSS before the student takes the course.
Instruction covers fundamental firearm safety, safe handling of semiautomatic firearms and ammunition magazines, proper firearm storage, child safety, firearm deaths associated with mental illness, Colorado Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPO), victim awareness and empathy, and responsible firearm ownership.
Students must successfully complete a written examination and demonstrate safe firearm handling proficiency with a minimum passing score of 90%.
Prerequisites: Students must have verified Hunter Education credentials and a valid Firearms Safety Course Eligibility Card issued through their county sheriff before attending.
Successful completion, combined with verified Hunter Education, satisfies the firearms safety training requirement for purchasing or transferring specified semiautomatic firearms under Colorado SB25-003.
Cancellation Policy: Students are required to cancel at least 24 hours in advance of a class date in order to receive a full refund. Classes cancelled less than 24 hours before the class will not be refunded.
