New Mexico Waiting Period Law Gravely Undermines Safety and Self-Defense Rights

West Bend, WI – The U.S. Concealed Carry Association (USCCA), which is the largest, fastest-growing self-defense association in the country dedicated to responsible gun owners, today released a statement condemning the passage and signing of New Mexico House Bill 219, which imposes a seven-day waiting period for gun purchases.  

“A seven-day waiting period is not necessary when there are instant background check systems in place, nor do they have any impact in reducing violent crime. As demonstrated by her recent actions to curb concealed carry rights in Albuquerque, it’s clear that Governor Lujan Grisham disregards the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding New Mexicans,” said Mike Lowney, President of Delta Defense, the service provider to the USCCA. 

The signing of House Bill 219 marks another massive step toward curbing New Mexicans’ constitutional rights taken by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, who, in recent months, has made her anti-gun agenda abundantly clear. Last year, she took sweeping executive action under the guise of “public health” to ban law-abiding gun owners from carrying their firearms in public spaces. 

“It’s time that Governor Lujan Grishman prioritizes enforcing existing laws and targeting criminals, rather than disproportionately impeding law-abiding citizens from exercising their natural-born right to self-defense,” concluded Lowney.
