What You'll Learn
The Community Emergency First Aid course teaches everyday people how to step in and help during common medical emergencies. Participants learn how to quickly assess a scene so they can keep themselves and others safe before offering assistance. The class emphasizes recognizing early signs of serious conditions and taking calm, effective action while waiting for professional responders. Students practice simple bleeding‑control techniques and other hands‑on skills that anyone can use with minimal equipment. The curriculum introduces basic airway and breathing support methods appropriate for civilian responders. Learners explore how to assist someone experiencing chest discomfort, allergic reactions, or sudden medical changes. The course also covers how to support a person who becomes unconscious, faints, or shows signs of shock. Minor injuries such as burns, sprains, and small wounds are addressed with practical, easy‑to‑remember steps. Communication plays a major role, and students learn how to coordinate with 911, family members, and bystanders during an emergency. By the end, participants feel more connected to their community and confident in their ability to make a meaningful difference when it matters most.
Cancellation Policy: Students are required to cancel at least 48 hours in advance of a class date in order to receive a full refund. Classes cancelled less than 48 hours before the class will not be refunded.
What We'll Teach
Building Your Own First Aid Kit
While there are a number of diagnostic tools, medications, and devices that EMS providers have access to that are simply not available to non-professionals, the vast majority of the items that you’d find in the back of a typical ambulance or medic bag (and the tools that were discussed in Lessons One, Two and Three) are things that nonprofessionals can find online with just a few clicks (and I’ll share my favorite websites with you), or, even purchase at your local drugstore. To help you to prioritize your own purchases, I’m going to suggest what type of gear might be included in emergency first aid kits of three different sizes to fit three different needs, or, three different “missions.” I’ll wrap up this chapter with a few suggestions on where you can go from here.
