I will admit it: I have some liberal friends. Yes, I have been known to rub elbows with the likes of school teachers, organic farmers, and artists. I even worked for a time in the “mainstream” media in a newsroom full of people who liked the idea of socialism until I suggested that we all get paid exactly the same amount regardless of how much work we did. But I digress.

One of my liberal friends dropped me a note the other day asking what I thought about people who buy ammo in bulk. The note asked if there should be some sort of government “red flag” raised when someone buys 6,000 rounds of ammo.

“The big red flag of Communism!” is what I should have said, but I was much more diplomatic.

First up, unless you are suspected of committing a crime, it is none of the government’s business how much of something you buy. Yes, I understand the concerns over people buying large amounts of fertilizer, but, once again, I feel like it is an infringement on the 4th Amendment when the government goes snooping around without probable cause. Is it probable cause when a guy who is not a farmer suddenly buys 2,000 pounds of ammonium nitrate? Maybe, given the totality of the circumstances. But does that not put us on a slippery slope to the government claiming probable cause to investigate after EVERY ammo purchase?

Do you know why I buy thousands of rounds of ammo? Because I typically fire 500 or more rounds during a day of training. That is my right. I am not committing any crime. No one should bother me about it.

But apparently the liberal logic goes like this: A guy who buys 5,000 rounds of ammo is likely to commit a crime.

Huh?

Who could carry 5,000 rounds of ammo to a crime scene? Who could use 5,000 rounds of ammo during the commission of a crime? Look out for the guy struggling with the handcart full of ammo boxes. He might be a robber. Gimme a break.

The next line took us to an even more disturbing place. Liberal logic appears to connect large ammo purchases with some sort of coming insurrection. It is as if liberals think ammo purchasers are apparently planning to overthrow the government in the coming months.

My response is simple: Do you think we are on the verge of armed insurrection? Do you think people might believe they NEED that much ammo for the coming trouble?

The liberal invariably says, “Well, I don’t think we are on the cusp of revolution, but maybe that gun nut over there thinks the country is about ready to fall into anarchy.”

To which I respond, “So then why are you worried? He is stockpiling the ammo for use at a later date. He is not planning to use it now. He is planning to mount an armed defense IF and ONLY IF things go really bad. What you should do is make friends with him NOW, so that later, if things go bad, he will help protect you and your family.”

As you can imagine, I don’t care how much ammo you buy and I don’t think anyone else should care, either. But some people do. We can’t do anything about that…except buy more ammo.

Don’t even start in on me about how many guns I have.

Train hard. Stay safe.
