Nobody tells you what happens after…

After the threat is over. After the shot is fired. After you make it home and lock the door and realize your hands are shaking.

Nobody tells you that surviving the attack might be the easy part.

Milli Stanford-Miles found out the hard way.

She's a 67-year-old great-grandmother. A full-time caregiver who had spent two decades looking after other people's families the same way she looked after her own – with patience, with faith, and with everything she had.

On the night of October 6, 2022, she ran a quick errand.

What came next would take nearly two years of her life, cost more than half a million dollars to fight, and force her to stand trial … TWICE … for the act of defending herself.

She was driving a loaner Mini Cooper through Compton, California, when a white Lexus came flying down a freeway on-ramp and forced her to swerve hard across four lanes of traffic to avoid a collision. She assumed reckless driving … so she kept going.

Then the Lexus hit her again.

A deliberate clip to the rear bumper.

The tiny Mini Cooper fishtailed across the freeway. By the time she regained control, the Lexus had moved alongside her and was forcing her toward the shoulder.

Milli knew this tactic.

A neighbor of hers had been killed exactly this way two years before … rear-ended, pulled over, beaten to death at the side of the road.

She wasn't stopping.

She took a dark exit ramp and pulled under a streetlight to search for her phone, which had gone flying during the swerve. Before she could find it, headlights filled her mirror.

The Lexus. Backing toward her. Fast.

She reached into the back seat for her Glock 17, loaded the magazine, racked a round, and placed it under her right leg.

The Lexus idled behind her.

Eventually, the driver rolled his window down. He pointed his phone at her. They argued.

Then he said something that ended the argument entirely. "I've got more coming."

Milli told him to follow her to a lighted area so they could call the police. He agreed. She headed for the only place she knew she would be safe — the guard station at her gated community, three miles away.

She never got there alone.

A red car pulled alongside her going the wrong direction. A silver car closed in on the right. The Lexus stayed locked to her bumper.

Three cars. Faces she couldn't see. Heads moving in the dark.

"I was scared for my life," she said.

She wove through potholes and lane changes to keep them from boxing her in. She didn't know if they would fire into her window. She kept driving.

Then the guard gate came into view.

Both lanes were blocked.

She swung into the entrance, screaming through her open window for the guard to hurry. Before he could move, something appeared in the opening.

Not a face. Not a voice.

A chest. Just a shirt. Filling the entire window.

Hands plunged through the opening, grabbing for the door handle.

There was nowhere left to go.

Milli took the Glock from under her leg, leaned back, and fired once.

The man staggered away from the car.

She drove up the hill, got inside, and did exactly what her training had prepared her to do.

She called 911 herself.

She called the Delta Defense Critical Response Team.

An attorney from the USCCA Attorney Network called back within minutes and arrived at the gate as police were pulling in.

"[Being arrested] was the least of my worries that night," she said. "It just was the least of my worries."

Her bail … set at $50,000 … was posted through her USCCA® Membership before morning.

She was home by 9 a.m.

The teenager she had shot survived. A single round to the abdomen. He made a full recovery.

None of the people who chased her were charged.

Milli was charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon, misdemeanor hit and run, and misdemeanor possession of a concealed firearm.

The maximum sentence: Up to 22 years in prison.

What followed wasn't one trial.

It was two.

Attorney Dave McDermott of McDermott Law Group took her case. The self-defense liability insurance benefit included with her USCCA Membership covered everything … a new legal team, a full defense built from scratch, and nearly two years of fighting a system that, in Milli's words, wasn't looking for the truth.

"They don't care if you're guilty or innocent," she said. "I just need a conviction here.' That's all."

McDermott and his son spent seven straight days at Milli's home preparing her for trial. Police reports. Body-cam transcripts. Cross-examination drills. Day after day until she could answer every question without flinching.

The first trial ended in a hung jury. Eight guilty, four not guilty.

The prosecution had shown a 38-second video of Milli … angry, shouting, using language she says she never uses – over and over to open the case. What the clip didn't show was the threat the driver had made seconds before the recording started. Milli and McDermott believed it had been deliberately cut. The driver later admitted under oath the full recording had lasted two to three minutes. The judge denied motions to subpoena his phone.

Nine months later, a second jury.

McDermott came back with everything. A professional video editor on standby. Real-time transcript updates. During one lunch recess, the prosecution demanded re-cut video clips with matching transcripts – in minutes. McDermott delivered before the afternoon session resumed.

In closing arguments, the prosecutor told the jury Milli had never called 911.

She had. The recording existed. The prosecutor knew it.

On July 12, 2024 … 22 months after the night on the freeway … the verdict arrived.

The jury came back — Not guilty.

On the felony. The one that would have taken the rest of her life.

The two misdemeanor counts hung again. The prosecution signaled a third trial.

Within a month, they relented.

All remaining charges dismissed.

McDermott estimated the total cost of Milli's defense exceeded $550,000.

"Half a million dollars to a 67-year-old great-grandmother living in Compton, California," he said. "Where would she be right now?"

Every dollar was covered through her USCCA Membership.

"It actually saved my life, my sanity, my everything," Milli said.

"Would I ever be caught dead without it?" she said. Not ever. I would skip meals to pay the premium.

She is still fighting to get her firearms returned by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

She is still teaching Steppin' dance workshops.

She is still here.
