The Narrow Divide

A masked man rushed the driver's side window and shoved a pistol against Molly's temple.

One moment she was sitting in her own driveway. The next, a stranger was pointing a gun at her head.

Lindsey stood outside the vehicle holding the pistol Molly had just handed him. But he couldn't shoot. Not with Molly directly in the line of fire.

Instead, he raised the gun where the attacker could see it.

The reaction was immediate.

The man's attention shifted away from Molly and toward Lindsey.

Lindsey fired.

The round shattered both windows of the Tahoe, passed within inches of Molly's face, and struck the attacker. Glass exploded through the vehicle as the gunman staggered backward.

The shot missed Molly's head by approximately four inches.

But the fight wasn't over.

Gunfire continued. Lindsey dropped low beside the Tahoe while Molly lost sight of both men. All she could hear were gunshots and her own screams.

Eventually, survival instinct took over.

She grabbed her phone and called 911.

"I need someone in my house right now," she told the dispatcher. "There's a gunman trying to shoot my husband."

Outside, Lindsey saw movement near the rear of the vehicle.

The attacker was still advancing.

Despite being wounded, he continued moving toward the Tahoe. Lindsey later recalled believing he was about to be shot, but he was determined to stop the man before he could reach Molly.

When the attacker emerged from around the vehicle, Lindsey fired again.

Then again.

Finally, the threat stopped.

Then the gray SUV pulled into the driveway.

The vehicle blocked the Tahoe from behind, and a woman stepped out carrying an AR-15-style rifle.

Lindsey immediately recognized her.

It was Cheryl.

His ex-wife.

Molly recognized her too.

In an instant, years of fear, warnings, and unresolved concerns suddenly became very real.

Cheryl moved toward the driver's side door and pointed the rifle directly at Molly.

"Please no," Molly pleaded. "Please don't shoot."

For a split second, Molly thought about her children.

She believed she was about to die.

The rifle swung away from Molly and toward Lindsey.
