Most people would have kept driving. Luke Reed didn't.

He was 23 years old, 260 pounds, and on his way to Whataburger for a milkshake on a Saturday night in Houston. He had a Glock P80 tucked under his left thigh … because driving short distances with it appendix-carried was uncomfortable, and Luke Reed was nothing if not practical.

He had bought that Glock on his 21st birthday. He had been shooting at Range USA several times a month ever since. He believed in constitutional carry, he believed in being prepared, and he believed that if you had the right tool and the ability to help someone who couldn't help themselves…

You helped.

That belief was about to cost him three hours in the back of a patrol car.

He was pulling into the Whataburger drive-through when something caught his eye at the Chase Bank next door.

A man dressed in black with his face covered was running behind a Chevy Silverado parked at a drive-through ATM.

Strange. Worth a second look.

Luke wrapped around the front of the bank to get a better angle.

What he saw stopped him cold.

The man in black was standing on top of the ATM's anti-theft bar … using the height to reach through the Silverado's window … and pistol-whipping the driver.

Luke parked behind a wall, out of sight.

He flagged down a passing driver and told him to call the police.

Then he drew his Glock and moved.

"I went running over there," he said … though he admits now that announcing himself the way he did – "Hey! Stop!" – was hardly intimidating.

His warning was hardly intimidating. It didn't matter.

The moment the attacker heard him, he spun and raised his own firearm toward Luke.

Luke was already firing.

He was 20 to 25 yards out. Four busy lanes of Westheimer Road directly behind his target. He aimed low … deliberately, consciously, even in the middle of a gunfight.

"I just didn't want to be the good Samaritan that accidentally shot a passerby," he said.

"And I don't even know how I had time to think about that. Everything just happened so quick."

He fired a handful of rounds while backing up and angling left. When the attacker shifted direction, still armed, still advancing, Luke fired again.

Two connected.

One in the calf, just below the knee.

One near the ankle.

The attacker went down.

Luke approached with his Glock still up. He didn't see the man drop his weapon. As he closed in, the attacker told him he was only 17 years old – apparently hoping the information would change something.

He was free to go. No charges. No follow-up. Nothing.

Luke held his position until the man dropped the gun … a badly mismatched frankengun with a slide and frame that didn't belong together.

The victim circled back. Welts on his head. A bleeding cut. He retrieved his cash, thanked Luke … then swung a wild haymaker at the man on the ground and toppled over him.

Luke stepped in.

"Come on, man. You don't want a civil lawsuit or something. He's down. He's out. You got your money back."

When Houston PD arrived, Luke drove his car closer to the scene, unloaded and secured his Glock, holstered it, and waited.

He identified himself as the shooter to the first officer on scene.

Then he made the mistake of reaching toward his holster to show where the gun was.

"Whoa, keep your hands up!"

He spent the next three hours handcuffed in the back of a patrol car while detectives reviewed Whataburger's security footage and waited on a subpoena for the bank cameras.

When the bank footage came back, it confirmed everything Luke had said.

Until nearly two years later, when a subpoena arrived.

The attacker … 25-year-old Kevin Ross, wanted for murder in Louisiana … had been charged. Luke was called as a witness for the state of Texas. He sat through hours of waiting, testified to every detail on the stand, and weathered a defense attorney who spent cross-examination trying to twist his words.

Luke testified. Ross was convicted.

He's now serving his sentence at Garza West in Beeville, Texas. Eligible for parole no sooner than April 2038.

"I don't think about the gentleman often," Luke said. "But I feel like if you do bad things, you get bad things done to you."

In the time since, Luke lost 100 pounds. He became a licensed apprentice electrician. He traded the Glock P80 for a Beretta M9A4.

And he joined the USCCA®.

"I decided that if I'm going to have a gun on my waist, I'd better have a lawyer in my pocket," he said.

"The incident helped me understand that I need to be better prepared for anything that I encounter. If that's a lawsuit or [criminal charges] in a self-defense or defense-of-others scenario, then I have USCCA watching my 6."

He got lucky in April 2023. He knows it.

Next time … if there is a next time … he won't be going in without a plan for everything that follows.

Because preparedness isn't just about what happens in the moment.
