"Thirty-five years of law enforcement has made it clear that while the death or serious injury of a loved one (or ones self) may well be the worst day of your life, a close second would be the day you are arrested and criminally prosecuted. You need an advocate on your side and such representation is prohibitively expensive for many citizens. Without the confidence inspired by the training and wise counsel of the USCCA, as well as the financial support available if needed, I would likely leave my personal protection firearm at home in the safe."

Defending himself and his family against vehicular attack…

In October 2017, following an unprovoked altercation in a Chicago bar, Francisco Munoz, his pregnant fiance, and his brother prepared to head home. But one of the men from the group who assaulted Munoz and his brother inside the bar spotted them and began yelling to his friends. Seconds later, an SUV raced toward them, narrowly missing Munoz and striking his brother. Terrified, Munoz saw his brother caught on the hood of the passing vehicle. He drew his legally carried concealed handgun and fired in an attempt to get the vehicle to stop. Some of the shots hit the man standing in the parking lot who had alerted his friends.

Munoz was arrested and charged with eight counts of attempted murder, one count of aggravated battery, and three counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm. He faced a potential life sentence. Munoz, a USCCA Member, contacted the Critical Response Team and was quickly put in touch with experienced attorney Dave McDermott, a member of the USCCA Attorney Network.

The bench trial lasted nearly two years and was filled with intense preparation and emotional strain for Munoz. The judge ultimately found Munoz not guilty. Without the USCCA's support, Francisco almost certainly wouldn't have been able to afford a competent defense. His attorney fees totaled more than $176,000, according to McDermott.
