In this article, I will discuss five of the best 1911 handguns currently on the market. Readers may disagree on their favorites; however, this list is based on personal experience and my thorough vetting of each model. These handguns offer exceptional performance and quality, each with its own unique features. All of my personal 1911 handguns are chambered in .45 ACP.

Springfield Tactical Response Pistol

A number of years ago, the FBI launched a competition for a new SWAT pistol, specifically a 1911, demanding performance many thought unobtainable. However, Springfield’s handgun, which became known as the Bureau Model, passed the test, firing 25,000 cartridges without a single malfunction and achieving a 1.25-inch, five-shot group from 25 yards.

The Tactical Response Pistol (TRP) from Springfield is a similar model, intended to offer credible performance at an affordable price. The TRP boasts front strap checkering, Novak-type tritium sights, and a crisp trigger action. With its upswept beavertail grip safety and well-designed G10 grips, the TRP is a great combination of value and performance.

Wilson Combat Close Quarters Battle

Wilson Combat’s Close Quarters Battle (CQB) model takes the classic 1911 design and elevates it with superior steel and manufacturing processes. The CQB features a tight frame-to-slide fit, ensuring smooth operation and less wear over time. It is a 5-inch-barreled Government Model pistol with Armor Tuff finish. All parts of the CQB are manufactured in-house. The slide lock safety locks in place with a positive snap. The pistol features a slight undercut beneath the trigger guard, lowering the bore axis and making for a superior high hold. The front strap is nicely checkered, with a well-defined exact cut. Sunburst grips offer a good match of abrasion and adhesion. The rear Wilson Battlesight U-notch sight offers enhanced speed. This pistol is not only a masterpiece of engineering but also an excellent choice for personal defense.

Les Baer Premier 1911

Les Baer mastered the art of gunsmithing after working drag cars. Known for precision and tight tolerances, his guns are tightly fitted and will often demand a break-in period. With parts that go back into place in exactly the same manner each time they move, the wear on these custom handguns is smooth and even. Les Baer pistols come with an accuracy guarantee of 3 inches at 50 yards in some models. If you own a very good 1911 and feel limited by the pistols performance the Les Baer pistol may be for you.

This pistol features an ambidextrous slide lock safety, forward and rear cocking serrations, and a tight barrel-to-frame lockup. While the Les Baer Premier requires a barrel bushing wrench for disassembly, its exceptional accuracy and reliability make it a top choice for shooters seeking a high-quality custom 1911.
