I’ve recently been working with Byrna SD and CL less-lethal pistol launchers, as well as the TCR rifle launcher. These are serious self-defense tools for civilians and law enforcement alike. They would shine in use for crowd control or home defense.
Each model comes equipped with Picatinny railing right from the factory. Pairing these less-lethal launchers with the TLR-1 HP can offer a tactical edge. After some concerning late-night car prowling incidents on our street, I decided to upgrade the Byrna SD I keep on hand for home defense with the Streamlight TLR-1 HP.

The TLR-1 HP is Streamlight’s new high-power, weapon-mounted 1,000-lumen light, engineered for maximum reach and tactical reliability. It features continuous and momentary on settings as well as a strobe setting.

A Weapon Light Design that Works
The TLR-1 HP is easy to run. Its two CR123A batteries load easily from the rear of the light. Mounting is also simple as there is only one screw, located on the left side, which can be finger-tightened. While no tools are necessary, a coin will do if you want to lock it down further.
It attaches to both Glock and Picatinny-style rails, and Streamlight includes a set of interchangeable rail keys to ensure compatibility with a wide range of handguns and carbines.
Streamlight continues to provide straightforward operation controls. Once mounted, the ambidextrous paddle-style levers at the rear of the light provide full control over every function. Whether you’re engaging the constant-on beam, a quick momentary burst, or deploying the strobe for maximum disruption, the controls are intuitive and responsive.
The TLR-1 HP arrived in short order and proved to be ideal for use of the Byrna SD pistol, which is the larger of the two models. Despite the CL having only a single rail slot, the light secured firmly with a solid lockup — no tools required. With Streamlight’s history of excellent engineering, I shouldn’t have been worried.
Streamlight TLR-1 HP + Byrna: A Tactical Match Made for Self-Defense
While packing for a recent two-week vacation, I chose to bring the Byrna CL launcher along with my regular carry handgun. To keep things simple, I left the Byrna SD at home and brought the Streamlight TLR-1 HP as a nightstand accessory. Although the holster didn’t accommodate the light, I mounted it each night for home-defense readiness against anything from raccoons to deadly threats. During the day, I stowed the CL in my vehicle’s center console, removing the light as needed. The setup was seamless, versatile and effective — a true blend of less-lethal protection and tactical lighting performance.
