If you’re serious about semi-automatic 12-gauge tactical shotguns for home defense, competition or training, take a look at the Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical Thunder Ranch shotgun.
Mossberg Heritage: Tough yet Refined
Founded by Swedish immigrant O.F. Mossberg and his two sons, Mossberg Firearms set out in 1919 to manufacture durable, reliable firearms that everyday Americans could afford.
More than a century later, Mossberg has achieved that goal and then some.
Mossberg shotguns are the essence of dependable. With a wide variety of both semi-automatic and pump-action models, most Mossberg shotguns feature synthetic stocks.
However, they do produce the Retrograde series with classic walnut-finished stocks and blued barrels for the traditionalists, starting around $500. I would venture, though, that most buyers turn to Mossberg for reliable, affordable shotguns built to perform under hard use.
The Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical Thunder Ranch takes the company’s mission a step further. It’s a refined, competition-grade, gas-operated semi-auto that merges battlefield toughness with smooth operation—designed for shooters who want a 940 that’s ready for anything.
Owning a tactical shotgun is one thing — knowing how to use it effectively is another.
Understanding self-defense shotguns is just the first step. Proper training transforms you from a gun owner into a confident protector.

940 Pro Thunder Ranch Details and Design
It’s always interesting what stands out when you first handle a firearm in person. Having only briefly looked at the Mossberg 940 Thunder Ranch online before requesting a test sample, the first thing that caught my eye out of the box was the color.
The Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical Thunder Ranch is a 12-gauge gas-piston-operated semi-automatic shotgun, which makes it smooth and fast to operate.
In a gas-piston-operated shotgun, the felt recoil is less because of the distribution of energy through the piston system. While inertia guns tend to be lighter, the 940’s slightly heavier build and gas operation combine to make it far more comfortable during extended shooting sessions.
Though designed to be multi-purpose, the Mossberg 940 really shines as a competition firearm. Mossberg partnered with Clint Smith of Thunder Ranch to develop this model.
And if Clint Smith’s name is on a Mossberg, you can be confident it’s been built to run hard, perform reliably, and survive the toughest classes and matches.
As mentioned, the 940 Pro Tactical Thunder Ranch Shotgun is designed for multiple uses, but where it shines, besides for self-defense is in competition and training. That’s why Mossberg sought out design input from Clint Smith.
And if Clint Smith put his name on a quality Mossberg shotgun, you know you have purchased something that will hold up under the harshest conditions, be they competitive or life and death. And of course, what better shotgun to bring to a Thunder Ranch shotgun class?

Shooting the Mossberg Thunder Ranch at the Range
At an outdoor range, I used two Remington loads designed for self-defense to gauge performance and recoil control.
Remington no longer manufactures the first load: the 2 ¾-inch heavy density Ultimate Home Defense 2×4 Duplex Shot Load. Featuring a black-hulled case packed with 1 ¼ ounces of tungsten-bronze-iron shot, this heavier than standard lead pellets load retains higher energy and delivers more power at 1,250 feet per second.
My first shot from 20 feet went high and right on the cardboard silhouette. The pattern — an even mix of #2 and #4 shot — measured approximately 12 inches. It would be a good load for home defense indoors or short-range field use.
After reacclimating to the recoil, I loaded up four more rounds for rapid-fire shooting on a steel silhouette. Cycling as fast as I could get back on target from 20 feet, the Mossberg 940 Thunder Ranch performed flawlessly.
Each shot delivered a solid center hit and provided a satisfying “clang.”
I switched over to my favorite 12-gauge defensive load: Remington 2 ¾ 12-gauge 8-pellet Managed Recoil 00 Buckshot. Formerly known as the “reduced recoil” load, Remington reduced group size and stray flyers by lowering the normal 00 pellet count from nine to eight.
I adopted it as the training load for our police academy and as the duty load for my former sheriff’s office years ago.
Moving out to 25 feet, I fired four rounds into the same cardboard silhouette. The first round ejected smoothly from the 940 and dropped all eight pellets into a 3-inch cluster dead center and reminded me why I prefer the managed recoil load.
The remaining three rounds grouped approximately 9 inches high by 6 inches wide, again with consistent cycling and no issues.
I didn’t have any 3-inch magnum rounds on-hand to fire, but there’s really no need. A 2¾-inch shell will handle any realistic defensive or training scenario short of stopping a grizzly bear.
The gas system on the Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical Thunder Ranch absorbed recoil impressively, making fast follow-up shots easy and controlled.
Mossberg 940 Thunder Ranch Review
The Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical Thunder Ranch Shotgun is fine semi-automatic shotgugn designed to be capable in tactical situations as well as competition. Its smooth trigger feels custom-tuned. The gas-piston system delivers reliable cycling across a range of loads.
While I usually skip red dots on pistols, I’d mount one on the 940 Pro Thunder Ranch without hesitation. On a long gun, the red dot sits naturally in your line of sight and is easy to find without occluding your view of what’s downrange.
With an MSRP of $1,190, the Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical Thunder Ranch shotgun offers serious value. It’s rugged enough for duty or defense, refined enough for competition and will give you a lifetime of service.
