Magazine release: Large, round and checkered, the PDP’s reversible magazine release can be easily reached by the thumb but doesn’t protrude far enough to be bumped while carrying. For lefties, Walther included the tools necessary to swap it to the other side.
Magazine well: The mildly flared magazine well makes reloads easy without bulking up the frame.
Grip: The polymer grip, checkered all the way around its reduced circumference, and the undercut trigger guard, squared in the 1980s style, make for a comfortable grip and better control.

Trigger and Slide Operation

The trigger uses the Glock-style safety lever in the middle of the trigger blade, and measured 5 pounds, 7.3 ounces on my Wheeler trigger gauge. With about ¼ inch of take-up, it was crisp, predictable and fairly standard for a safety lever trigger.

There are two Picatinny rail slots at the front end of the frame. The squared slide has a set of adjustable white-dot sights installed from the factory but is set up for the addition of a red-dot pistol optic.

The slide is cut with wide rear grooves. I personally prefer the narrower groove design of the Colt 1911 or Browning P-35 Hi-Power as they offer a better grasp when wet. But the reduced-force racking system and narrower circumference does make the PDP F one of the easiest to manipulate and grasp.

Walther PDP F 3.5 Performance at the Range

I brought a friend along to help me test the PDP F-3.5. An active-duty military member, he is an experienced marksman who shoots for work and recreation. I didn’t mention that the PDP 3.5 was originally designed for female shooters, which turned out to be a great way to test its universal appeal.

I brought along several partial boxes, cleaning up my ammo supply. We fired a wide selection of Federal 9mm ammo, including:

  • 150-grain Syntech Action Pistol Load (890 feet per second)
  • 147-grain Gold Medal Action Pistol FMJ (900 feet per second)
  • 124-grain HST (1,150 feet per second)
  • 124-grain Punch ( 1,150 feet per second)

Starting at 30 feet and shooting on a B-27 STOP Upper Torso target, my friend fired 10 rounds of mixed ammo. His group measured 4 inches, with a tight seven-round cluster in the 10-ring.

I loaded up 14 rounds and aimed at the scoring explanation area to the right of the head. My group measured 6 ½ inches (4 ¼ without the flyer).

On a fresh B27 PROS silhouette, the groups tightened even further. His 14-round group measured 3 ½ inches, with nine rounds inside 1 ¼ inches. My final six-round head group measured 2½ inches, with a single flyer stretching it to 4½ inches.

Across all loads, the PDP-F 3.5 proved accurate and controllable. The reduced slide force and ergonomic grip translated to less fatigue and faster follow-up shots.
