SCCY CPX-2 9mm: Firearm Torture Test

In this edition of the USCCA’s Gun Vault, Concealed Carry Magazine Executive Editor Kevin Michalowski recaps the SCCY CPX-2 9mm and puts it to the ultimate test by literally dragging it through the mud. Will he be able to “kill” this budget pistol?

SCCY CPX-2 9mm: An Overview

The SCCY CPX-2 9mm is a rugged, 10-round budget pistol. Kevin has done everything in his power to cause a failure in this pistol, including putting 850 rounds through it without cleaning it and throwing it and dragging it through 10 yards of sand. Now, Kevin is going to see if dunking the SCCY in a bucket of mud will stop it from firing two more full magazines without malfunction.

The SCCY Firearm Torture Test

Kevin combines two scoops of dirt from the backyard with 2 gallons of water to create mud. He then inserts a loaded magazine into the SCCY CPX-2 and puts the entire pistol (with the action open) into the bucket of mud. After “sloshing” the bucket around, Kevin removes the SCCY, ensuring there is nothing down the bore.

Kevin notes that the gun looks “terrible” but still readies it before sending two magazines’ worth of rounds downrange.

What do you think? Will the SCCY CPX-2 malfunction?

How Did the SCCY CPX-2 Shoot After Being Tortured?

Kevin points out that the magazine follower on the first magazine isn’t coming up and that the pistol is not engaged to be fired. Kevin performs a quick field-strip of the SCCY and finds “a lot of mud and water.” He notes the trigger mechanism does not appear to be functioning. After putting the pistol back together, Kevin tries using the other magazine to put rounds on target. With a little adjusting, he manages to get a few rounds in the chamber and downrange.

What’s the Verdict on the SCCY CPX-2?

Although dipping the CPX-2 9mm in a bucket of mud caused the pistol to malfunction, it didn’t completely STOP functioning. Surprisingly, the accuracy of the rounds that Kevin managed to send downrange was not diminished.
