After reviewing the Rancor IX folding knife, I knew I had to try out more products from Bear & Son. The American-made tactical blade was an impressive display of performance and quality suited to everyday carry (EDC). Another impressive option that stands out with it refined design is the Rancher Sideliner. While the Rancher Sideliner lacks the aggressive “tactical” look of the Rancor IX, it delivers exceptional functionality and strength, making it a versatile folding knife for a wide range of tasks.
The Rancher Sideliner 21 Pattern finger-flip folder combines elegance with utility, embodying the same American craftsmanship that Bear & Son is known for. This folding lock blade knife offers a robust design and reliable performance, ideal for anyone looking for a high-quality EDC knife without the typical tactical appearance.

About Bear & Son’s Rancher Sideliner Knife
In 20 years of reviewing products for various publications, this is the most beautiful folding or fixed-blade knife I’ve encountered. All the stainless-steel components are polished mirror bright, including the removable/non-reversible pocket clip. They contrast nicely with the India Stag handles. For additional comfort and control, the left-side stainless bolster has a deep indentation to accommodate the right index finger. The smaller indentation on the right side is more subtle and allows the index finger easy access to the liner lock mechanism so the blade can be easily unlocked for closing.
The natural indentations in the stag bone handles provide reverse texturing that improves the security of the grip. The handles curve gently downward and narrow toward the rear of the Rancher, following the form of a closed human hand. The open sides and rear of the handle make the Rancher folding knife easier to clean; simply blowing should eliminate lint or dirt.
The blade is a sleek drop point. When open, the finger flipper serves as the lower finger guard. The blade’s spine has seven perpendicular grooves at the rear that serve to anchor the gripping thumb. Though not shown on any of the Rancher blades online, a nail nick is included on the Bear & Son blades.
The Bear and Son Rancher Sideliner features “Bear and Son” and “USA” markings on the left side of the blade, while the pocket clip side is stamped with “D2” and “Tool Steel.” According to Hudson Tool Steel, D2 tool steel is a high-carbon, high-chromium steel known for its durability, wear resistance and toughness, making it an excellent choice for serious knife blades. Despite its strength, it can be easily sharpened with a quality knife sharpener, such as the one from Smith & Wesson, ensuring reliable performance and easy maintenance.
Using and Carrying the Folding Knife
The Rancher’s finger flipper mechanism is slick, opening easily and smoothly. The blade came plenty sharp from the factory and made quick work of the standard tasks one normally uses a good quality pocketknife for. The liner lock holds the Rancher’s blade open securely but releases the blade easily. While I utilized an empty nylon flashlight case to prevent scratching the bolsters before I could photograph the knife, Bear & Son offers reasonably priced leather sheaths that would fit the Rancher Sideliner knife.
The Bear and Son Rancher Sideliner 4 ¼-inch folder is more than just a utility knife. Its polished finish and refined design make it ideal for those who appreciate a blend of style and functionality. If you’re looking for a rugged option for heavy use, consider the Rancher model with titanium handles for scratch-resistant durability. The Rancher Sideliner, whether in stag or cocobolo, is a perfect gift for collectors or anyone who values quality craftsmanship.
