A few years ago, I signed up for an email newsletter from (gasp!) Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. Why in the world would I do that? Well, I wanted to keep tabs on what Shannon Watts and her misguided, Everytown-backed group were up to.

Moms Demand Action … Against Women’s Rights

If you’re not familiar with Moms Demand Action, they claim to stand for “gun sense” (which is basically just gun control) while fighting against “gun violence” (which is technically just violence). And they often call themselves “gun safety advocates,” which, as I’ve mentioned before, is a terrible misnomer. It’s the 2A advocates who are truly advocating for safe gun training, storage, use, etc.

At any rate, the Moms Demand Action group is usually busy protesting gun owners or boycotting businesses that haven’t officially made statements to ban guns. And they’ve tried to shoot down (pun intended) all state efforts to pass constitutional carry.

They’re also continually spreading gross exaggerations and lies.

Lies Anti-Gun Groups Spread

A few recent emails from Watts’ crew have had me shaking my head at the woeful terminology and phrasing. Apparently, according to Moms Demand Action, we gun owners are “more unhinged than ever” as we’re actively trying to “pass bills that encourage violence.”

For instance, it seems that we gun owners want “Shoot First Laws” that “make murder legal.” One email boldly (and incorrectly) claims that “People can use deadly force as a first option rather than the last, even when they can clearly and safely walk away.” And another email outrageously stated, “These laws lead to more gun deaths every month nationwide. They also drastically reduce consequences for shooters and worsen anti-Black racism.” (These are their exact words!)

If you haven’t been paying attention, Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action are plowing ahead, full force. They’re changing the terminology about firearms, skewing statistics in their favor, bullying everyone in sight who doesn’t agree with them, and belittling and slandering gun owners and Second Amendment organizations. They are painting us all as the bad guys, right along with the hardened criminals …  under their wholesome name of motherhood!

Ironically, a 2020 study titled “Do Moms Demand Action on Guns?” found after analyzing data that “contemporary depictions of mothers as a distinctively pro-gun control constituency are largely inaccurate.”

More Gun Control from MDA

Here’s another recent email example in which Moms Demand Action is pushing for support on the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). Now, on the surface, this sounds like a tremendous idea, with praiseworthy goals of protecting women from stalkers and abusers. But the way it’s been written, VAWA can actually have very dangerous consequences for women, for victims and for gun owners because of the gun control that’s been written in. For instance, it lists among its “priorities” to enact the NICS Denial Notification Act and amend the Gun Control Act.

Moms Demand Action claims that gun owners are using scare tactics and making up stories, however. They say we have “spun the fable that women who denounce abusive dating partners are lying about them just to take their guns away.” They claim that we want people “to think women are killed by shadowy intruders breaking into their homes; in reality, women overwhelmingly die at the hands of men they know.”

The Truth

If Watts’ group faced the truth, they probably wouldn’t have much to say. Without their overstatements, misrepresentations and manipulation of facts, Moms Demand Action would have to face the fact that mothers don’t want to be instructed to wait for help or to be chastised for taking responsibility for their own safety. When it all boils down to it, women have the right to choose what’s right for themselves and their families …  because gun rights are women’s rights.
