Take the Online Course

Your online course topics include:

  • Home security and defense
  • Conflict avoidance and situational awareness
  • Handgun, shotgun and AR-15 basics
  • Instruction in the fundamentals of pistol use and shooting
  • Physiology of violent encounters
  • Legal aspects of pistol possession, carry and use, including self-defense and the restrictions on the use of deadly force, plus what to do in the aftermath
  • A brief overview on gear and gadgets and ongoing training
  • Explanation of the application process
  • Laws that relate to weapons and the use of deadly force

Step 2  (1-2 hours long)

Complete the in-Person Shooting Qualification

Attend your in-person range instruction and shooting qualification from one of our TOP Minnesota Certified Instructors in the state.
Once you’ve completed the qualification, you can officially file the required application for the Minnesota Permit to Carry a Pistol with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

Your in-person shooting qualification includes:

  • Instruction in the fundamentals of pistol use
  • Successful completion of an actual shooting qualification exercise
  • Instruction in the fundamental legal aspects of pistol possession, carry, and use, including self-defense and the restrictions on the use of deadly force

You will not need to memorize times or round count for each volley of fire. The instructor will tell you what to do.

Send Your Completed Application to the State of Minnesota

Once you’ve completed the online course and shooting qualification, you can officially file the required application for the Minnesota Permit to Carry a Pistol with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

Do I need to take the in-person shooting qualification?

Yes. Anyone who wants to get a PCP must successfully complete the in-person shooting qualification. You cannot just take the online course. You must complete both.

How long will it take to complete the online course?

Typically it takes about 4-6 hours to go through the online course, excluding any quizzes and/or exams and restudying that you may choose to do.

Do I have to complete the course all at once?

You may complete the course at your own pace. The course can be completed in one sitting or completed a little at a time over several days.

Do I have to be a resident to take the Minnesota Permit to Carry Course?

Yes. You need to be a resident of Minnesota to take this online course.

How long will it take to get my Minnesota PCP?

DPS will make every effort to issue your license within 60 days of receiving the completed application packet. If the application is incomplete or requires additional information to complete the background check, you will be notified in writing.
