I (Joey) was born and raised in Washington State in a rural/farming community and have always had an interest in U.S. history and the settling of America. Through these pursuits, I became impassioned in the concept of an individual taking personal responsibility for their own safety and security.

In 1997, I moved to Michigan with my wife and children. I found Michigan to have a very different gun culture that really intrigued me. In the early 2000’s, I became a member of the Detroit Sportsman’s Congress and an NRA Range Safety Officer both there and at Bass Pro Shops. I had the opportunity to work closely with CPL and DNR instructors. In 2005, I attended and graduated from the Oakland Police Academy and worked in armed private security and in plain clothes personal security.

In 2020 I became a USCCA Certified Training Instructor in several disciplines. My goal is to create a safe and comfortable environment to welcome and instruct beginning shooters in both firearms and personal security with a focus on situational awareness and conflict avoidance. While I strongly believe in an individual’s God-given right to self-defense as supported in our Second Amendment, the battle that can be avoided is the best alternative to a battle fought…won or lost!!

I have designed this course to meet the minimum statutory requirements as well as additional topics that I feel are extremely important for safe and responsible gun ownership. I want an individual to leave my classes with confidence and competency of the skills taught and instill a desire to continually seek more training and practice towards consistent improvement.
