What You'll Learn

To become an security officer or security guard in the state of Maryland, there are several minimum requirements that must be met. Anyone wishing to be licensed as an unarmed security guard must meet and maintain the following qualifications: 12-Hour Guard Certification Training
This training shall include instruction on the following topics:

  1. Relevant criminal law
  2. Appropriate use of force
  3. Alternatives to force
  4. De-escalation techniques
  5. Promoting appropriate interactions with individuals who:
    • Are under 18 years of age
    • Have behavioral health or other disabilities
    • Are in crisis
      Additional Requirements:
  • The applicant must be at least 18 years of age.
  • The applicant must be a citizen or legal resident of the United States; proof of residency will be required.
  • The applicant must not have any felony convictions.
  • Candidates will undergo an FBI-style background check.
  • Fingerprints and two passport-sized color photos of the applicant’s head and shoulders are required.
  • An accurately completed application form is mandatory.
  • A nonrefundable application fee of $15 must be submitted.Training will cover topics such as writing reports, dealing with the public, maintaining order in crowded situations, and working competently with authorities. Security guards must comply with the state's legal requirements and regulations.

Cancellation Policy: Students are required to cancel at least 48 hours in advance of the class date in order to receive a full refund. Classes canceled less than 48 hours before the class will not be refunded.
