Why I Carry What I Carry: Part 2

Last Tuesday, I shared a little bit about why my go-to carry of choice is the Springfield Armory XD-S 9mm. Following is a little more about why I love to use and carry this particular gun. (Again… please note that these are just my humble opinions!)

I really enjoy shooting my XD-S. It’s taken me a little time to become accustomed to it, after training for a while with the larger, heavier XD 9mm, but this semi-automatic pistol has a great weight and feel for me. It fits comfortably in my hands and would be difficult for an attacker to grab from me, and I shoot it accurately, so it’s a very effective means of protection!

So far, I have only been able to shoot about 500 rounds (mostly inexpensive, reloaded ammo), but I have not encountered any errors with feeding or ejection, nor have I experienced any other malfunctions (like I have a few times with the XD…which, by the way, was most likely shooter error!). Oddly enough, as much as I enjoy this handgun, my husband doesn’t like practicing with my XD-S. For some reason, while he shoots with ease with most other guns (including the XD), he’s not as precise with my gun. Technically speaking, of course, the XD-S can be a bit more difficult to shoot. Because of the gun’s reduced size, the shooter will experience a little more recoil. For those who are used to—or who prefer—bigger handguns, it may be slightly trickier to control the smaller barrel and the smaller grip. But that just goes to show you that when it comes to firearms, you need to practice and experiment with a gun in order to decide what works best for you.  To each, his—or her—own!

Besides wanting to know what a busy mom juggling work, home, and family might carry, people also want to know how I carry. I like to use several different methods and products interchangeably, and I plan to share each of them on this blog during the course of the year. But currently, I’m just carrying my pistol in my purse. It’s not a special, concealed-carry purse; my XD-S is tucked into my black and white Coach poppy signature tote with quilted, silver leather trim! Why? Truth be told, I’ve been drooling over this particular handbag for quite a long time. I recently bid on it at an auction and won, so, of course, I had to use it all winter long!

Also, for a little added protection in my purse, my gun is safely stored in a soft, Uncle Mike’s holster that covers the XD-S, right past the trigger. This ultra-thin holster, which is actually designed to be worn inside the pants, features a suede-like material that protects my gun as well as the interior of my handbag…and all the random contents inside! (Thank goodness—my hairspray and those extra packs of Finding Nemo gummies are safe!) The black gun in a black holster virtually disappears into the dark satin interior of my purse. I know the gun is there, and my children know it’s there, but no one else would be able to tell with just a casual glance.
