CCM Profile: Tarra Mehrkens "Strength, Safety, and Survival"
Oleg Volk
I first photographed Tarra Mehrkens a decade ago. Aged 25 at the time, she looked fifty. Obese, graying, uncertain of herself, she was a stereotypical abused trailer dweller with low self-esteem and few prospects. She was in a relationship with an emotionally abusive sociopath and even then, the cycle of abuse was escalating. . . . keep reading

CCM Profile: David Dyer-Bennett
Oleg Volk
A change of mind can happen in an instant. For me, that moment came in 1994 at the home of David Dyer-Bennet. An undergraduate student at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, I had recently befriended David through rec.photo news group. Seeing a curious clock on his desk, I asked David if he owned . . . keep reading

CCM Profile -- Rob Campbell Bare hands aren't enough
USCCA member Rob Campbell grew up in the country. "My father was an avid hunter," he reminisces, "and had me out hunting when I was very young -- five, six, seven years old." Although his father was never interested in any type of defensive shooting, it was from his father that he learned to appreciate firearms and what firearms could do. . . . keep reading

CCM Profile: Pastor Bryan Strickland -- "God is Protecting Christians Every Day"
Bryan Strickland, pastor of the New Covenant Church of God (Cleveland) in Roseland, Louisiana, is no stranger to firearms. "I kind of grew up around guns," Bryan admits in his soft southern accent. His father retired out of the Marine Corps after 26 years, and Bryan found it natural to follow in his father's footsteps and enter the military at age 18. After a 7-year tour of duty that included work as a Combat Engineer in the 1st Infantry Division during Desert Storm, Bryan left the military and turned to a different type of service. He became a pastor, later leaving his first church in order to attend college in Tennessee where he majored in Pastoral Theology. Eventually, Bryan and his . . . keep reading

CCM Profile: Major Jean-Michel Guerin
I am a first generation American born in New York, NY, in 1970. A few years before I was born, my parents, Haitian citizens, moved to the U.S. where my father completed medical school and started his medical career. In the mid 1970s they decided to move back to Haiti where I was fortunate enough to continue my education at an American school founded and run by Christian Missionaries. Shortly after graduating high school, I moved back to the U.S. where I enlisted in the United States Army, was honorably discharged on an ROTC scholarship, and re-entered the military as an officer. I am currently . . . keep reading

CCM Profile: Uli Gebhard -- "Never Give Up"
I was born and raised in Germany. Our family owned a .22 rifle, and my father introduced me very early on to proper firearms safety and safe gun handling. What our city did not have was a range for recreational shooting. Without the proper location, I never got to fire that rifle. For a short period during my high school years, I joined a shooting club and competed first with air rifle and air pistol, later also in smallbore pistol. Most interesting were the more dynamic disciplines such as OSP (Olympic Rapid Fire Pistol). My scores were not necessarily the best, but I enjoyed . . . keep reading

CCM Profile: David Lichtenstein
"I will not be a sheep ..."
David Lichtenstein was born in St. Louis, Missouri and moved to Pennsylvania in his early teens, moving back to Missouri after high school to work on his family's farm. He's worked in Oklahoma on oil drilling rigs and in Pennsylvania for the railroad. During college, he again ended up back in Missouri, working in factories and cleaning houses. He graduated from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor's degree in Journalism in 1991 and married his wife, Lesa, that same year. Outside of firearms, David's hobbies are pets and motor vehicles. He and his wife have several dogs: Margo, Bocephus, Little Bit, Gracie and Lucky who are mixed breeds; Zoe and Gus who are Boston Terriers; Maggie, a Boxer; and Tanner, a German Shepherd. They also enjoy . . . keep reading

CCM Profiles: Terrie Williams
"Life's a Journey"
I was the first daughter of three, born to a dad who knew how to do everything! Because of that, I can change oil in my truck, fix my lawnmower, run a chainsaw, and do some simple carpentry, electric, and plumbing. But I didn't grow up with guns. No one in my family shot for sport or hunted, although my husband was a hunter and a trap shooter. Each year when he sighted in his shotgun for deer season, he offered to let me shoot it, but seeing the recoil of a 1-1/4 oz slug on a six feet two, 240 pound guy didn't make me anxious to try. Besides, his hunting group made it pretty clear that women weren't welcome, so there was no point in learning, or so I thought. Then in 2001, my husband died. All of a sudden I was a gun owner, and the recipient of more advice than I ever expected. In retrospect, the best advice I got about guns was, "You either need to learn to handle and shoot them, or you need to sell them." My education began . . . keep reading

CCM Profile: Russ White -- Curiosity Killed the Cat - Or Did It?
They say that curiosity killed the cat. Of course, the part we tend to forget is that satisfaction brought him back. Curiosity is pretty much the story of my life. I've studied and worked in a wide variety of fields, from illustration and web page design to repairing radar systems. I was born in Atlanta and grew up in Morrow, Georgia. I can still remember the first traffic signal ever installed in Morrow, at the end of my street, to provide a crossing point for the elementary school. I split my time between school, the outdoors, and amateur radio, earning a Novice class license at 11 years old (WB4YRV). We spent our weekends . . . keep reading

Throughout her life, Sophie Chen has endeavored to do right by others. A biochemistry researcher by education, she also volunteers extensively. Since 2000, Sophie has taught English in Mexico, tutored English as a second language (ESL)to Persian and Iraqi refugees in Nashville, and conducted Sunday school for kids. A sunny, cheery young lady, Sophie sees the best in all people she meets. Her view of personal safety had been equally positive. She was quite safe, she told her friends. "Besides," she wrote, "I already have the sword of the Spirit and the armor of God." Her friends concurred, either sharing her conviction or deferring to her certainty. . . . keep reading

CCM Profile: Jim Clark
Jim Clark and CCM Staff
When I was growing up, we had only one firearm in our home. Dad was always very strict about safety. Later, I found out that his mother had killed his brother with an "unloaded" gun. In my twenties, for Father's Day I gave my dad a Ruger Blackhawk, which was his first pistol. This began a long and enjoyable relationship with my dad and pistols. Until I was forty or so, I was pretty much apolitical. My parents were Democrats, so I was a Democrat. I had no real direction and just took life as it came. I was in the Marine Corps, and then in 1967 my son was born. The weight and responsibility of the world began to take its toll on my good time attitude. I began to take work more seriously. Then, as they say, I grew up. When my granddaughter was born, I began to think of . . . keep reading

CCM Profile: Joshua Benson
The most remarkable thing about Joshua Benson is the words he doesn't say. In a world full of whiny emo-boys and latte-sipping cowards, a man who never utters the words "I can't" and who never asks for a drop of sympathy is a refreshing change. I met Josh for the first time last spring at the Firearms Academy of Seattle, during the last course Jim Cirillo ever taught. Cirillo's class was a two-day adventure into close quarters shooting techniques, including alternative sighting methods and shooting from downed positions. Josh wheeled himself in . . . keep reading
